Get Organized  Start your own filing system  Create a folder in email for college items  Also organize paper copies in folder or binder – Copies of Applications – Resume – List of Community Service Activities – Housing Contracts and Deposits – Enrollment and Registration Information – FSA ID number (for Financial Aid, Oct. 2016) – Copy of FAFSA, CSS Profile

Application Process The Sooner You Start, the Better  I mportant Needed I nformation: Neatness, Accuracy, Honesty, Clarity, Conciseness, Uniqueness  (Apply Online) – List of Extracurricular Activities , grades 9-12 – List of Community Service Activities , grades 9-12 – Senior Schedule - the senior schedule you list on your applications is a contract between you and your prospective schools – If you ask your counselor to change your schedule after you have applied, you will need to contact the admissions offices at your prospective schools and receive their permission firs rst . Application Process Continued Have you sent your test scores to that school?  (ACT) actstudent.org (SAT) collegeboard.com • I f you want to use your school test you need to get your scores onto your ACT account. - I f you have only taken the ACT at school you can use the code on your score report while creating an account at ACT. - I f you already have a ACT account and you want to add the school scores to it you will have to call ACT directly and speak with their customer service to get your scores linked. Test scores need to be sent directly from the testing company by setting up an account online

Ordering Your Transcripts  Go to: http://www.parchment.com/ – Click on “create account” and follow instructions – Once registered, the website will provide additional instructions for ordering your transcripts: Transcripts can be sent to academic destinations, (colleges, universities, etc.), the NCAA, the Common Application, or any other destination of your choosing.

  14. What is the cost?  The cost of a typical transcript is $3.33 and must be charged to a debit/credit card. (Pre-paid credit cards can be purchased, for a small fee, at places like Walgreens, Walmart, and CVS.)  Students who meet the eligibility requirements for an ACT/SAT fee waiver are also eligible for four free transcripts during their high school career. If you receive free or reduced- price lunch, are part of the AVID program, or have a challenging financial situation please create an account at Parchment.com and then contact your school counseling office for more information about a fee waiver.

  15. Application Process Continued  Pay Close Attention to Deadlines (give time for a good recommendation) – Early Decision - (Binding Contract) – Early Action - earlier deadline for application and you receive acceptance decision earlier; not binding – Regular Decision – Some schools have application deadlines (common application schools) and others have rolling admissions. Check school websites for deadlines. The earlier you apply t he bet t er. – All applications need to be turned in to your counselor by December 1 st

Application Fees….  Are non-refundable  UW System Schools – application fee of $50 for each school you apply to, $60 to UW-Madison  Madison College - $35 application fee – ALSO $20 Fee to take the required compass test. (They also accept the ACT now so may or may not need to take the Compass Test.  Other schools – application fees can range from $20 - $100  If you qualify for free/reduced lunch, see your counselor about a waiver for the application fees or check online at the college you are applying to for a fee waiver.

If you are applying to UW-Madison… https://apply.wisconsin.edu Highly competitive • Your date of application is important • September 1, 2016 is the first day they will begin • reviewing applications. First Fall Notification (Early Action) Due November 1st • Find out - End of January Second Fall Notification Due February 1st – Find out - • End of March Scholarships also due the beginning of February • Submit your application as soon as possible if you • are applying to UW-Madison

If you are applying to University of Minnesota – Twin Cities  Also highly competitive  Now requiring 4 years of Math for entrance to Management, Biological Sciences, and Science and Engineering programs.  2 years of foreign Language  The priority application deadline is November 1 st (they do not do early action or early decision) Honor and scholarships given to students  Regular deadline is December 15th

The Common Application www.commonapp.org  Membership of 517 institutions represents the full range of higher education institutions in the US and International members.  Direction sheets are available in student services if you are applying to common app school.  Students are required to invite counselor and 2 other recommenders. Please provide a brag sheet to the person who will be asking to be a recommender.

  22. New at UW-Madison  Starting this fall 2016, students applying to UW-Madison can use the Common Application to complete their applications  Students are NOT required to use the Common Application, it is just another option available at this time

  23. Madison Area Technical College (Madison College)  Madison College provides hands-on training for more than 140 careers through an associate degree, professional certificate and transfer programs.  Apply online at http:/ / madisoncollege.edu/ apply- nowregister  Fee is $35  Send your transcripts through www.parchment.com I f you receive free/ reduced lunch, please see your counselor to help waive the application fee online.

Options  Liberal Arts (College) Transfer Program  Specific Programs and Certificates  Apprenticeships  After Accepted: – Complete COMPASS placement test or you can use ACT, you may want to talk to your counselor to see if you should take COMPASS. If you didn’t do well on the ACT it could help you place into higher level courses.
