Early Intervention is Key to Success

SCOPS are committed to reducing reliance on anthelmintics:

  • Grazing strategies - reduced challenge, avoidance

tactics and bioactive forages.

  • Nutrition and acquired immunity
  • Quarantine protocols to avoid importation of AR and

parasites.

  • Monitoring and contamination mapping.
  • Breeding for ‘resistance’

(strong acquired immunity) and/or resilience

Three Main Selection Pressures:

  • 1. Under dosing – ineffective treatments caused by

incorrect dose rate and/or technique. Oral, injectable preparations and particular concern regarding topical (pour-ons) in cattle.

  • 2. Over-use – unnecessary or inadvertent treatments (e.g.

endectocides and combination products, treatment of adult animals). Use of ineffective treatments.

  • 3. Low refugia – failure to mitigate the effects of

treatment through dilution of survivors. E.g. ‘Dose and move’ /‘poo picking’ in horse paddocks.

Motivation?

slide-11
SLIDE 11

If we can measure it, we can manage it. Waiting for clinical signs…. Measuring performance Indicators – early intervention.
