  • Why do we tell jokes to other people?

WHAT IS A KNOCK-KNOCK JOKE?

  • Knock-knock!
  • Who’s there?
  • Shirley.
  • Shirley who?
  • Shirley you can see who it is – I’m standing right in front of you!
  • Knock-knock jokes are always told the same way
  • They’re little conversations between two people separated by a door
  • The first and second lines are always the same
  • The third line is always a NOUN (someone’s first name)
  • The fourth line always asks for their surname
  • The fifth line is always a PHRASE which expands on the person’s name in an

unexpected way

HOW DO KNOCK-KNOCK JOKES WORK?

  • Knock-knock jokes are little conversations
  • They expand a noun into an unexpected phrase
  • In our joke on the last slide, the noun is Shirley
  • The expanded phrase is Shirley you can see who I am
  • The joke works because Shirley sounds the same as Surely, but means

something different – they are homophones (remember them?)

  • Abbie sounds like Happy

NOW, USE YOUR NAMES AND SOUND-ALIKES TO MAKE UP YOUR OWN KNOCK-KNOCK JOKES!

  • Take one of the names you thought of, and use it as your noun
  • Now, take its sound-alike word and expand it into a phrase
  • We’ll use Carrie as our noun, and its sound-alike is Carry
  • The expanded phrase is Carry me in
  • Knock-knock!
  • Who’s there?
  • Carrie.
  • Carrie who?
  • Carry me in, I’m exhausted!

QUESTION TIME!

  • Some words are used to ask questions
  • Knock-knock jokes use who – Who’s there?
  • Can you think of more question words which start with W?
  • Are there any other question words?
  • Try thinking of as many questions as you can, and see which words

can be used to ask a question
