  1. S.P.A.G. LOLZ! KS2 2: “KNOCK - KNOCK!”

  2. TODAY’S CHALLENGE: • Learn how to EXPAND nouns into phrases • RECOGNISE question words • PERFORM knock-knock jokes with a friend

  3. WHAT IS ‘FUNNY’? • What does ‘funny’ mean? • What happens when we find something funny? • Does that make you feel good or bad? • Why do we tell jokes to other people?

  4. WHAT IS A KNOCK-KNOCK JOKE? • Knock-knock! • Who’s there? • Shirley. • Shirley who? • Shirley you can see who it is – I’m standing right in front of you! • Knock-knock jokes are always told the same way • They’re little conversations between two people separated by a door • The first and second lines are always the same • The third line is always a NOUN (someone’s first name) • The fourth line always asks for their surname • The fifth line is always a PHRASE which expands on the person’s name in an unexpected way

  5. HOW DO KNOCK-KNOCK JOKES WORK? • Knock-knock jokes are little conversations • They expand a noun into an unexpected phrase • In our joke on the last slide, the noun is Shirley • The expanded phrase is Shirley you can see who I am • The joke works because Shirley sounds the same as Surely, but means something different – they are homophones (remember them?)

  6. THE NAME GAME! • Write down as many names as you can • Now write down words which sound like those names. Here are a few to get you started: • Shirley sounds like Surely • Carrie sounds like Carry • Abbie sounds like Happy • Andrew sounds like Ann drew

  7. NOW, USE YOUR NAMES AND SOUND-ALIKES TO MAKE UP YOUR OWN KNOCK-KNOCK JOKES! • Take one of the names you thought of, and use it as your noun • Now, take its sound-alike word and expand it into a phrase • We’ll use Carrie as our noun, and its sound-alike is Carry • The expanded phrase is Carry me in • Knock-knock! • Who’s there? • Carrie. • Carrie who? • Carry me in, I’m exhausted!

  8. QUESTION TIME! • Some words are used to ask questions • Knock-knock jokes use who – Who’s there? • Can you think of more question words which start with W? • Are there any other question words? • Try thinking of as many questions as you can, and see which words can be used to ask a question

  9. YOU’RE ALMOST DONE… Answer these questions to finish today’s challenge: • Can you take a noun and expand it into a phrase? • Can you spot question words when you see them? • Write down the joke you created today that you like best!

  10. WELL DONE! NOW GO AND MAKE SOMEONE HAPPY BY TELLING THEM YOUR KNOCK-KNOCK JOKES!
