  4. Main actions and implementations ! Penalty point system entered into force in Latvia on July 7, 2004; ! Fines increased for offences that affect road safety; ! Different public awareness campaigns implemented; ! Good testing system of new drivers to obtain driving license established; ! Black spot management system developed, as well as the audit of roads introduced; ! Since 1995 annual vehicles’ technical inspection introduced; ! As the significant proportion of lethality is caused by road traffic accidents with pedestrians, the measures of separation of different groups of road users have to be implemented intensively; ! Children road safety education system is not yet implemented. It has to be completed in the soonest possible time as children in the future will become new road users; ! Traffic organisation measures and traffic safety improvements in the road network have to be continued by creating safe and mobile environment for all road users; MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT AND COMMUNICATIONS OF THE REPUBLIC OF LATVIA

  8. Future steps ! Control of road users has to be improved by paying special attention to speed control with the use of photo radars; ! It is important to continue the forming of public awareness on safe traffic in the road system, however, it may not fully replace engineering measures in the road network and control of road users.   9. Conclusions ! The road safety in Latvia has improved during last years and has one of the best results in reduction of lethality on roads in the EU. !
