Project Goals

Overall Goal and Project Motivation: Help Goodwill realize higher revenues for their clothing salvage compared to selling them in bulk by converting cotton-based garments into a more valuable product which can be marketed and sold: cotton-based insulation ✓ Design an insulation product(s) which performs equal or better than competitors

➢ Existing Cotton-Based Insulation Companies: Bonded Logic, Applegate

✓ Present a viable business case to our customer - Goodwill of the Finger Lakes. ✓ Provide specifications for a manufacturing process if possible

➢ Specific machines required, make and model, floor space requirements, operating costs... As much information as possible!

Things we hope to learn at Fiber Conversion...

➢ Would like to take a tour of your facility and learn about your equipment and processes ➢ See questions to follow… We are sure this is not an exhaustive list and are seeking the wisdom of people in the textile repurposing industry!

Things we hope to learn at Fiber Conversion...

Machinery ➢ Make and model of shredding machine/machine line ➢ Just a single unit or multiple machines to accomplish shredding? ➢ Does your shredding process have provisions for collecting and removing metals from buttons, rivets, zippers, etc…? ➢ How much does it cost to operate? ➢ Processing capacity (lb/hour or equivalent)?

➢ Do you have multiple shredders with various capacities?

➢ How many people to operate it? ➢ Ability to control shred character? (eg. fiber length)

Machinery Continued ➢ What other machines are you using in your operation which might be relevant to

  • urs?

➢ Baling machine, vacuum/blower system to move shredded material around, machines to blend different fibers together, machines to batt fibers?

➢ Are you aware of any automatic sorting technologies on the market? A machine(s) that could accept garments of different fabrics and sort them out into various materials (eg. cotton vs. synthetic). ➢ Any recommended companies who are designers/manufacturers of this type of machinery that we should talk to?

Things we hope to learn at Fiber Conversion...

Textile Repurposing Industry ➢ Who are “graders” and what is their role? ➢ Can you explain the different grades of materials and what they mean? ➢ Is there a place where you can access market data/pricing such as website or

  • ther publication so we can understand this market?

➢ It is hypothetically possible that our customer could still enter a market other than “end product” (eg. become a supplier of denim) which still provides more value than their current bulk-sale practices
