Qualified Designations of Origin in La Rioja
An upper category must be recognized for vines of Qualified Designation of Origin.
- All vines which form part in a Qualified Designation of Origin, must achieve some requirements from
the designation of origin. The conditions are explained in the following points.
- Vines must pass some control systems since its production until its commercialization, so as to
guarantee quality and quantity.
- All produced vine must be bottled.
- All vines so as to achieve the Qualified Origin Denomination, must have been recognized for ten
years as vines from a Denomination of Origin.
- There must exist a cartographic delimitation, formed by villages, of all the territories which are able
to elaborate vines. Those villages form part in the Origin Designation.
In Spain, there are only two qualified designations of origin: Rioja and Priorato (Priorat in Catalan).

- Rioja is the most ancient wine region of Spain, and
nowadays, it is the most famous one.
- Placed in the north of Spain, its extension is along
the Ebro River.
- Limits: Placed between the
Demanda Mountain Range and the Cantabrian one.
- Production areas:
Rioja Alta(Rioja villages and Burgos ones), Rioja Baja (villages of La Rioja and Navarra) , Rioja Alavesa (Some villages from Alava, a region of the Basque Country). Soils: All vineyards are placed in calcareous clay soils in high areas and ferruginous clay soil in the area near the rivers. Climate: Mixture of Mediterranean (Common in the Ebro valley) and Atlantic one (as it is near the Cantabrian Sea). We find mild temperatures and stable rains (350-450 mm per year). There are so many sun-light hours per year (2.800 more or less) and the height of the vineyards is about 350-650 m. This area is special for cultivating vineyard thanks to those climate conditions.
