The Cape Town Big 6 is a marketing initiative between:
- Cape Point
- Groot Constantia
- Kirstenbosch
- Robben Island
- Table Mountain Cableway
- V&A Waterfront
Our message is that a visit to Cape Town would be incomplete if you haven’t seen these six attractions. Community and economic development, social responsibility and the impact tourism has on the environment are areas in which the Big 6 invest heavily.

Education
Kirstenbosch: Education programmes through the years (1913 – present)
Kirstenbosch currently has two educational programmes running: The Biodiversity Education Programme | The Capacity Development Programme

Education
This programme has been running since 2001 and gives learners the opportunity to discover the top of Table Mountain and learn about the natural flora and fauna that are found on it. Lessons are themed around travel and tourism, geography and environmental studies. Since its inception in 2001, more than 250 000 learners have participated in the programme.

Robben Island scholarships
Education
Robben Island supports postgraduate academic and scholarship studies at a Pan African level through offering scholarships for the African Programme in Museums and Heritage Studies.
V&A Waterfront’s Captains Programme
V&A Waterfront identify promising high school students from less privileged community and engage them in training programmes at the V&A to expose them to opportunity and knowledge transfer within in the working environment.

V&A Waterfront sustainable initiatives
Kirstenbosch’s Outreach Greening Programme
The V&A Waterfront have invested R30 million in sustainable initiatives since 2008. Teaching school and community groups to plan, develop and maintain their own indigenous gardens.

Environment
Groot Constantia Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production (RECP) projects
Through Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production (RECP) projects Groot Contantia are very aware of consumption of resources on the estate. The first RECP project in 2011–2012 focused on reduction of energy and the second in 2013 on water efficiency. Erosion control is a constant focus, and the farm already boasts floodwater control systems that are way above standard. They are in the process
- f extending their baboon fence to control
baboons in an environmentally friendly way. Groot Constantia is a Biodiversity and Wine Initiative member and part of the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) programme, being audited by both annually.

Creating jobs
V&A Waterfront – The Watershed Robben Island
A R50 million (US$5million) refurbishment project of their existing Craft Market has been completed. This new development houses approximately 155 crafters and will serve as a small business development platform centred on craft and design. V&A currently directly employs over 19,000 people on the property on a daily basis. Employs unskilled labour from local communities and trains them in environmental conservation, encourages small businesses to supply and tender for services at RIM and allows SMME photographers to take pictures of tourists in their

Cape Point
Cape Point is uplifting their local community by creating job opportunities in a fairly remote area by employing staff from the surrounding areas, many of which are seen as disadvantaged communities.

Children are transported to school and after-school activities. Transport supplied for doctor visits, bi- weekly trips for groceries. Free electricity & water.

Blanket drive supporting the local underprivileged communities. Christmas Carols held as a charity fundraiser by the Rotary of Kirstenbosch. Supporting Hokisa Children’s Home and

activities.
V&A Waterfront
has a social worker on site to engage with, and rehabilitate destitute people who visit the public spaces. Currently financing an individual to complete their ambulance course through KFM wishlist.

Social Corporate Responsibility
Mandela Day 2014
Last year, Cape Town Big 6 celebrated Mandela Day with the children from Homes for Kids in South Africa (HOKISA). Despite some last minute weather-induced changes, everyone had a great day in true Madiba style.
