We live in a data driven society
Data is increasingly a strategic asset
Everyone wants more statistics and insights from the data we collect.
Real life context
Teaching and learning of Statistics must be grounded in real data and context to continue to be relevant.
But data has no value unless it is used
Increasing knowledge and capability of users to understand and use statistics is important.
Resources available from Statistics NZ
Synthetic Unit Record Files (SURFs)
A lot of teaching and learning is about summary statistics. But you can’t learn to create them without unit records.
Census 2013
More products from last year’s census continue to be released. You can get information about your local neighbourhood in various formats.
Tables from NZ.Stat (table builder replacement)
You can view and download the information you want from large datasets. Some recently added datasets are from the Census and General Social Survey.
Synthetic Unit Record Files (SURFs)
Unit records files are about individuals
Unit record files have data for individual persons or units. Each row is a person and each column is a variable.
What’s the most recent dataset available?
The 2006 Census birth cohort SURF. This dataset contains data of 10,000 newborns (less than one year old) on the night of the 2006 Census.
What does synthetic mean?
We create artificial people that have the same profiles, distributions, averages, and other statistical properties as the real data.
2006 Census birth cohort SURF
Where can I get it?
From the SURF for Schools section of the Statistics NZ website. There’s a data dictionary and explanatory notes about what it contains.
How was it made?
Made by a researcher from Auckland University, based on mixing and matching similar babies together.
What variables does it have?
Variables about the mums and dads (not necessarily biological parents) such as age, highest qualification, internet access, NZDep, home ownership
