Purpose of the Committee 3 • Consider the research on the sleeping patterns of adolescents and the effect those patterns have on achievement • Explore the possibility of a later start time for the high school • Create expanded learning possibilities in order to optimize opportunities for deep and engaged student learning

Process Used by the Committee and S ub-Committee 4 • Consideration of research and data • S urveyed high school students, parents, teachers and coaches • Met several times over a year and a half • S ight visit to neighboring schools • Presented findings to the HS staff and hosted after-school Q & A session • Hosted guest speaker from Glen Rock High S chool • Agreed upon a recommendation to the Board and the community • Discussed the effects of the committee recommendations on traffic with the Chief of Police

  5. Our Findings 5 • Adolescents have different sleep patterns • S tudent achievement increases when school begins later • Emotional health of adolescents improves when school begins later • Attendance improves • Best time to begin high school is 8:30 a.m. or later, ideally 9:00 a.m.

Our Findings (cont’ d) 6 • Longer (58 minutes) periods can provide more opport unit ies for engaged & act ive learning • More t ime for qualit y assignment s and assessment s • Fewer classes meet per day (6 of 8) • Fewer passing t imes creat es less disrupt ion and a reduct ion in non-inst ruct ional t ime • Day is less frenet ic for st udent s and st aff • Rotation of classes creates variety • More closely mimics college and “ real world” st ruct ures

  7. S ite Visits 7 S chools we visited with successful non-traditional schedules : 1st Round Northern Valley Regional High School - Demarest Northern Highlands High School Pascack Hills High School Ridgewood High School 2nd Round Glen Rock High School

  8. S ite Visits 8 During site visits, we: • Met with administrators • Met with teachers and guidance counselors • Met with students • Toured buildings • Observed classes

  9. S ight Visits – Findings 9 • No school we visited would return to a traditional schedule • S tudents comment favorably • Teachers discussed many benefits • Administrators are enthusiastic about the positive benefits for students and for staff

Advantages of Unit Lunch 10 • Lunch occurs at a consistent time when classes are not in session • S tudents have more access to guidance programs • S tudents can use time to get extra help • Athletes can be more involved in clubs/ activities • Peer Leader meetings can happen during lunch • Opportunities for informal collaboration time for staff • Provides less stress and greater likelihood students can eat with their friends

COURSES • Currently meets for 4 x 44 = 176 minutes per week - over three weeks: 528 minutes • New schedule will twice meet 2 x 58 + 40 =156 minutes per week and once for 3 x 58 + 40 = 214 minutes so over three weeks: 526 minutes • Means 2 minutes less per three weeks

S cience Labs and Physical Education 20 • S cience lab courses and P .E. classes will be scheduled side-by-side in either the first four or last four periods • Labs will be pulled from the P .E. course in days A, B, C or D, for the first two cycles • For the third cycle, there will be no lab pull- outs and the P .E. classes will meet
