R e l e a s Current Policy – Change in Gender Identity e d u n • Applicants who want their passport to reflect a d e change in their gender identity must first apply to the r t New Zealand Family Court for a declaration that h e recognises the nominated gender O f f i c i • Issues: a l I o The nature of the family court process can be complex and n f applicants may require legal representation or advice o r m o For practical reasons, there is a different process for people a residing outside New Zealand, and often other jurisdictions’ t i o processes are more relaxed n o We are creating difficulties for New Zealanders who are A c dual nationals (i.e. their UK passport already reflects t another gender) 1 9 8 2 Department of Internal Affairs

O f f i c i a l I • Issues: n f o r o Passport holders with gender ‘X’ displayed in their m a passport can encounter difficulties at border t i o control (in some countries). n A c t 1 9 8 2 Department of Internal Affairs

R e l e a s Future Policy … e d u n • We are aware of the recent policy changes in Australia d e r t h • The Department of Internal Affairs is also currently e reviewing its policies regarding the issuance of passports O f where there is a change in gender identity. f i c i a l • We are at the point of consulting with the community in I n order to develop the new policy f o r m a • Our current thinking is that applicants would provide a t i o witnessed Statutory Declaration with their application, n outlining their circumstances, and advising of the gender A c identity they wish to be displayed in the passport. t 1 9 8 2 Department of Internal Affairs
