What are our current & future challenges? R e l • A very large area of responsibility with large oceanic e a s areas e d u • Often have large SADs for operations in the oceanic n d e areas r t h • Increasing activity in Antarctica (fishing & tourism) e O f • SAROPs cannot be programmed in advance f i c i a • Some areas of NZ have gaps in SAR l I n f capability/capacity (e.g. Wairarapa Coast) o r m • Coastguard (NGO) limited to 12nm a t i o n • Systemic changes to Air Ambulance contracts may A c impact on availability for prolonged searches t 1 9 8 2
How might air surveillance help? R e l e Over the last seven years (2010/11 – 2016/17) SAR operations a s e supported by the current air surveillance capability of the P-3K2 d u Orion’s have resulted in: n d e • 119 lives saved (where, if SAR agencies had not intervened, r t h life would definitely have been lost) e O • 92 people rescued (where SAR agencies locate and rescue a f f i c person or people at risk and return them to a safe location) i a l I • 67 people assisted (where SAR agencies aid a person or n f o r people at low risk, but who, if left, would be at risk) m a t i o n NZSAR Secretariat estimates the 119 lives saved has averted a A c t social cost of $450.7million to the region 1 9 8 2
How can the system be improved? R e l e Expectation that the P-8A will takeover the role of the P- a s 3K2 especially with large/remote SAROPs e d u Opportunities of ASCC: n d • Close to NZ marine SAR (22 Sep 2018 kayaker missing e r t off Great Barrier Island), especially where there are h e capability gaps O f f i • Capability for missing a/c searches in NZ c i a l • Providing C2 for large/complex/remote SAROPs I n f o • Airdrop of lifesaving equipment/supplies r m a • Providing oversight of medevacs t i o n • Anomaly detection A c • Mobile phone locating t 1 9 8 2
Oil and Maritime Incident Response (non-SAR) R e l opportunities (Maritime NZ) e a s e d • Night time detection and/or tracking of u n d known oil spills e r t h e • Remote sensing and/or detection of O f f i unknown or unreported oil spills c i a l I n f o r m a t i o n A c t 1 9 8 2
