  6. QCE and ATAR are different

  7. New Senior System Fairness – all assessment is endorsed by the QCAA before setting Consistency – All assessment is marked using the same Instrument-specific marking guides (ISMGs) Transparency – Subject results are statewide with no scaling

  8. QCE – Queensland Certificate of Education

  9. QCE – Queensland Certificate of Education

  10. QCE – Queensland Certificate of Education • Subject results in general subjects are based on 4 summative assessments across units 3 & 4 3 Internal + 1 external exam • Subject results in applied subjects are based on 4 internal assessments across units 3 & 4

  11. Aim of the session

  12. VET courses – QCE points

  13. QCE - Assessment • All summative assessment pieces (Unit 3 & 4) are endorsed by the QCAA before they can be used in schools • All grades awarded by schools will be checked and confirmed by the QCAA • Graduated Year 12 students receive a Senior Statement . Eligible students also receive a QCE. • General subjects – numerical score + grade • Applied subjects – grade only

  14. QCE - Assessment • When enrolled in Applied and General Subjects, students are expected to complete all course and assessment requirements . For summative units, there must be evidence of a response to each summative assessment for a student to achieve a subject result. • External assessment contributes 25% of the overall subject result in senior subjects and assesses Unit 4 of the syllabus, except for The Arts, which assesses Units 3 and 4. • In mathematics and science subjects, external assessment contributes 50% of the overall subject result and assesses Units 3 and 4.

  17. What is ATAR? Page 17

  18. What is ATAR? Primary mechanism used nationally for tertiary admissions Indicates a student’s position relative to other students 2,000 point scale from 99.95 down to 0.00 ATARs less than 30.00 will be expressed as “30 and below” Will be calculated by QTAC for entry into courses in 2021 Will be the new standard pathway for Qld Year 12 students Page 18

  19. Eligibility 4 General Subjects + either: 5 General • Applied Subject ATAR • Completed Cert III Subjects or Higher VET Qual Page 19

  20. English requirement Students must pass a QCAA English subject to be an ATAR English will only contribute to an ATAR if it is one of their 5 best subjects Page 20

  21. Calculating ATAR Step 1: QCAA provides QTAC with student’s subject results (Units 3 and 4 only) and completed VET qualifications (Cert III or above). Step 2: The subject scaling process is undertaken. Step 3: The best five scaled subject results (from eligible inputs) are added together Step 4: Students are placed in a descending order of merit based on their Best five Subject Aggregates. Step 5: Determine how many students are to be in each of the 2000 ATAR bands (based on the Queensland Year 12 population). Step 6: Assign students to each ATAR band. The top 30 students are assigned ATAR 99.95, the next 30 students are assigned 99.90, and so on. Page 21

  22. Subject Scaling What is scaling? Scaling is not about the difficulty of the subject, but is about the level of competition in the subject. Refer to the QTAC website for more information about scaling. Page 22
