  2. Safety Glasses ● ANSI-approved, UL listed, or CSA rated non- shaded safety glasses ● Worn when working on the robot, with tools, or when at risk of exposure to flying particles or chemicals ● At the events: anywhere in the pit, on playing field, on practice field, and any area with signs requiring the use of eye protection ● If you wear prescription glasses you must wear safety glasses over them unless yours are impact resistant

  3. Hearing Protection ● When there is a high sound level, use hearing protection ● Earplugs and earmuffs are appropriate forms of hearing protection

  4. Foot Protection ● Wear shoes that cover the entire foot ● Must be substantial ● Must be close-toed and cover heels

  5. Gloves ● Required when lifting the robot ● At competitions they will be worn by the drive team ● Required when welding or cutting materials with an X-acto knife ● Gloves should NOT be worn when working with power tools, as they might get caught.

Machinery ● Always get help from a mentor or advisor when using the power tools ● Wear safety glasses ● Face shields when using chop saw, milling machine, bench grinder and metal lathe ● No loose clothing or jewelry, tie hair back ● Keep hands and fingers out of the way ● Never leave a machine on and unattended.

  7. Mechanical Guards ● Never use machinery or power tools without safety guards in place ● Contact safety captain or mentors about broken parts

  8. Materials ● Ensure materials are secured properly when working and will not fall ● Use a clamp when necessary ● If using long pieces of material, take caution and ensure it is not sticking out

  9. Working with the Robot ● Do not work on the robot while it is on ● Stay out of the way of moving parts ● No horseplay

  10. Lifting ● Do not attempt to lift heavy things alone ● Make sure robot is safe to move ○ secure parts ○ power off ● Wear gloves ● Make sure everyone moving the robot knows your path and destination ● Ensure the path is clear

  11. Proper Lifting Technique ● Appoint a coordinator to direct ● Ensure transporters are wearing PPE, including safety glasses and gloves ● Place feet close to the robot in balanced position ● Lift with legs; keep back straight ● Keep robot close to your body

  12. Power Strips ● Do not daisy chain power strips (plug one into another) ● Do not overload

  13. Daisy-Chaining

  14. Injuries / Incidents ● An injury is an injury no matter how small ● Report injuries, other incidents and near misses to the safety captain, a team mentor or Mr. M. ● Broken equipment should be reported to a team mentor or Mr. M. ● Complete a Team 3637 Injury / Incident form with safety captain

  15. Cleanliness ● A clean room is always safer than a messy room ● When you finish working with a tool, put it away ● Clean up at the end of the day ● When done, the room should be left neater than how you found it ● Clean up dust and debris with a dustpan and dispose of properly
