SLIDE 2

Objectives

 Review goals for “summer” conference calls  Review priority and feasibility ratings of strategies to support cancer prevention

 Discuss process of organizing data  Review Table  Discuss what is missing on list compared to our causal model

 Whittle down list of strategies to identify target strategies

 Remove strategies

Purpose of Action Team

 Long-Term

 Contextualize/prioritize Virginia Cancer Plan for our region  Submit competitive grant proposals for interventions/programs that meet the needs of the CCWW and region

 Summer 2019

 “Finalize” causal model to share with CAB in August  Organize sticker dot voting in a way that allows us to determine overlap/discrepancies in priority vs. feasibility and difference among community vs. academic members  Identify gaps between the causal models and strategies on VA Cancer Action Plan (i.e., are there things in the causal model that weren’t on the cancer action plan)  Identify top 2-4 priorities for our action team

 Next steps

 ‘Map’ (research) evidence to these priorities areas

Quick Review of VA State Cancer Plan

5 Goals with specific objectives (and sub-objectives) and strategies to reach objectives

  • 1. Reduce tobacco exposure.

 Decrease the percentage of Virginians who use tobacco products.

  • 2. Improve nutrition and physical activity among

Virginians.  Increase the percentage of Virginians who meet daily recommended fruit and vegetable intake.  Increase the percentage of Virginians who meet physical activity guidelines.  Decrease the percentage of Virginians who are

  • verweight or obese.
  • 3. Reduce HPV infections among Virginians.

 Increase the percentage of Virginians under 18 years of age completing the HPV vaccine series.

  • 4. Reduce exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the

sun and indoor tanning devices (to include, but not limited to tanning beds, booths, and sun lamps) among Virginians.  By 2022, Decrease the percentage of youth reporting sunburns in the past 12 months.  Decrease the percentage of youth who have used a tanning booth or sun lamp in the past 12 months.  Reduce melanoma incidence rate.

  • 5. Reduce exposure to radon among Virginians.

 By 2022, increase the annual reported number of homes tested for radon.  By 2022, increase the annual reported number of homes mitigated for radon.

Review of Rating Process

 Rated 44 (!) strategies prioritized by Virginia Cancer Plan

 1 vote per person for top priority  5 votes per person for priority  5 votes per person for feasibility

 12 people voted

 8 from community organizations  4 from UVA (2 researchers and 2 outreach staff)

Our role

 Organize sticker dot voting in a way that allows us to determine overlap/discrepancies in priority vs. feasibility and difference among community vs. academic members  Identify gaps between the causal models and strategies on VA Cancer Action Plan (i.e., are there things in the causal model that weren’t on the cancer action plan)  Identify top 2-4 priorities for our action team

HOW CAN THE DATA BEST BE SUMMARIZED TO FACILITATE THIS PROCESS??

slide-8
SLIDE 8

Too Much -- All Results

slide-9
SLIDE 9

Too little -- High level review of findings

 Lots of variability and no clear cut consensus

 Limited overlap with priorities and feasibility  Community organizations and UVA often rated differently (e.g., one high and one low)

 Only 4 strategies rated by ≥2 people as a priority and ≥ 2 people as feasible

slide-10
SLIDE 10

Just right – More results but organized …

 Removed strategies with less than two votes as a priority or as feasible  Organized into five categories

 Rated as priority and feasible by both groups  Rated as a priority and feasible overall with both groups having votes in one of the categories  Rated as a priority and feasible overall but not votes in each for each group  Rated as a priority (but not feasible) by one or more groups (both, only community, only UVA/research)  Rated as feasible (but not priority) by one or more groups (both, only community, only UVA/research)

 Added information about what goal and the rough method

NEXT S STEPS

slide-14
SLIDE 14

Next Steps

 August 1st meeting  Do we want another call in between to refine further?  Between Meeting Tasks/Communication  Email out to team members unable to attend for feedback  Send out updated table for reaction  Thoughts on improving communication / presentation
