Background The consumption of tobacco is a public health problem around the world. However, very limited number of studies addressed the tobacco consumption prevalence among adults in Algeria. Objective To measure the prevalence of current tobacco consumption in a representative sample of Algerian adults. Methods A household survey was carried out in 2004 We applied a standard multi-stage, cross-sectional study design Households were randomly selected in 24 provinces using a cluster sampling method An anonymous questionnaire was used by trained investigators to identify people using tobacco Prevalence of tobacco consumption was defined as the percentage of individuals who are current smokers or current tobacco chewers : persons who have smoked cigarettes or chewing on one or more days during the 30-day period before the survey was administered
