ASSET MANAGEMENT STRATEGY CONSULTATION
Key Initiatives 1. Change in road status 2. Use of ‘quiet lanes’ 3. Reducing the asset 4. Self financed and maintained items on the highway 5. Self help maintenance 6. Making assets redundant 7. Your ideas for saving money
ASSET MANAGEMENT STRATEGY CONSULTATION
- 1. Change in road status
Review of road classification and introduction of a lower category
- f unclassified roads
These could include those serving
- nly a minimal number of
properties or lesser roads to villages Would allow more flexibility in inspection frequency, intervention levels, repair techniques and road construction
ASSET MANAGEMENT STRATEGY CONSULTATION
- 2. Use of ‘quiet lanes’
Measures for some rural roads such as 20mph speed limits and narrowing to single carriageway to give priority to non-motorised users Could be used where alternative routes are available and problems exist with road edges breaking up Would discourage through traffic and allow flexibility in maintenance standards e.g. no grass cutting

ASSET MANAGEMENT STRATEGY CONSULTATION
- 3. Reducing the Asset
Explore opportunities for removing items on the highway. For example signs, safety fences and pedestrian barriers etc. Could also include de-illumination of some signs Would improve access/ mobility for pedestrians and reduce future maintenance costs including energy
ASSET MANAGEMENT STRATEGY CONSULTATION
- 4. Self financed and maintained highway items
Option for Parishes, Towns and Community Groups to ‘take ownership’ of items on the highway Could be used for electronic signs, grit bins, village signs/gateways etc. Would give groups the
- pportunity to enhance their
environment whilst at the same time reducing pressure
- n county council budgets
ASSET MANAGEMENT STRATEGY CONSULTATION
- 5. Self help maintenance
Create the conditions whereby Parishes, Towns and Community Groups could undertake certain routine maintenance activities Could be used for maintenance of wildflower verges, hedge cutting, clearance of ditches, siding out
- f footways, sign cleaning etc.
Would give groups the
- pportunity to carry out works
that would otherwise be a low priority for the county council
ASSET MANAGEMENT STRATEGY CONSULTATION
- 6. Making assets redundant
This would involve closing bridges, roads and footways Could be used when it makes sense to do so and suitable alternative routes exist
An extension of (3)
A reduction would reduce long term maintenance costs
