  1. Presentation Crossbreeding with Red Breeds Hamar june 2016 Henk Schoonvelde

  2. NRF x Holstein

  3. Intro • Henk Schoonvelde (41) • Married with Ilse , two kids ( 4 and 7) • Agriculture University • Hobbies: skiing , travel with family, nature • Dairyfarmer, member of EDF, board member agriculture related companies and consultant.

  4. Presentation • Dairy farming in the Netherlands • Schoonvelde dairyfarm • Vision • EDF results • More profit with crossbreeding • Vision about crossbreeding • Summary / conclusion

  5. Dairyfarming in the Netherlands • 18000 dairyfarms • 90 cows 50 ha • 8500 kg milk per cow • High protein grass silage and grazing • Low feeding costs • Efficient infrastructure • Lot of know how

  6. Typical Dutch landscape

  7. High input for: • Labour (25 euro p/h) • Groundprice (50000 euro) • Building costs (6000 euro per cow) • Environmental issues (slurry, mega farming, grazing)

  8. Dairyfarming in 2030 • ANIMAL WELFARE !!! • Health claims • Footprint • Cost of production

  9. White milk C c cheap , low footprint, …

  10. Milk with a story Authentic, organic ..

  11. Find the key • Balance between footprint, animal welfare, health benefits of milk, cost op production and authentic milk. • In North west Europe the dairyfarmers will need extra value on global milk price. • Produce : Organic or milk with a story or benefits for the globally growing upper middel class.

  12. Schoonvelde Dairyfarm • Dairy farm: • 140 ha • 106 ha grass • 34 ha maize silage • 280 dairycows 170 replacements • Production 33 kilo 4,2 fat 3,6 protein • • 18% replacement • Expansion to 300 cows • Production >35 kilo per day

  13. New barn built in 2012

  15. Member of

  16. EDF • 500 members in Europe • 50 in the Netherlands • Benchmarking • Learning and sharing from other members • 3 meetings each year

  17. Number 1 for profit/cow EDF 2016 • Melkveebedrijf Schoonvelde EDF Netherlands average • • 285 173 cows • 18% 24% replacement rate • 10200 8044 kg milk • 4.13 4.32 fat • 3.53 3.48 protein • 17175 15000 milk / ha • 18 44 vetenary costs • 41 44 medicine costs • 1.8 2.4 labor • • 1880 1649 EURO PROFIT / COW • 135 190 cellcount • 387 430 days calving interval

  18. Breeding strategy • 1940 – 1970 ( Dutch Frisians) • 1970 – 2000 ( Holstein ) • 2000 – 2012 ( Three and three way cross ) • 2012 - ( Holstein – Norwegian red)

  19. Why crossbreeding • We want strong and healthy dairycows with high production. • Labour is expensive so we need a lot of cows/milk per worker ( currently 135 ) • Feed and ground is expensive so we need longelivety and good feed conversion. • Lot of pressure in the Netherlands on antibiotic use.

  20. Three way cross • Holstein -> NRF -> Fleckvieh -> Holstein -> NRF – Fleckvieh ………… or • Two way cross NRF -> Holstein -> NRF -> Holstein

  21. Breeds • Holstein : • Strong: Milk , Frame and Udders • Weak: To large, Body condition, Low resistance (mastitus, fertility etc)

  22. • Fleckvieh • Strong, Body condition, Fertility • Heavy, large cows, Production, Heavy calves

  23. Norwegian red Number one breed for crossbreeding • Efficient cow (from feed to milk) • Medium, perfect sized • Perfect body condition (some beef no FAT!) • Strong feet and legs • Calving ease • Fertile • Crossbreds produce the same as Holstein cows • Geno has state of art breeding program

  24. Purebred Norwegian red

  25. • Results on our farm: • Calving interval 430 to 380 • Death calves from 14% to 7% • Cull rate from 35% to 20% • Production 8500 to 10000 • Protein from 3.3 to 3.6 • LESS WORK , LESS STRESS

  26. Norwegian red x Holstein

  27. NRF x FLV X HF

  28. Crossbreeding in the Netherlands • Started 10 years ago • Slow start • 5 years ago big boom • Crossbred cows have the same production as holstein cows. Much better health traits. • Breeds used: Fleckvieh, Brown Swiss, Jersey, Montbeliarde , Swedish red and Norwegian red. • Currently 15% of al cows are crossbred

  29. BRAUT (NRF) x Holstein

  30. Norwegian red x Holstein

  31. Norwegian red x Holstein

  32. More profit with red breeds • Crossbreds between are easy to manage ( less stress and work) • Medium sized ( ideal for freestalls ) • High production (upto 16000 kg in our farm) • Good temperament • > 200 euro extra net profit per cow/year

  33. More money – less problems

  34. Summary • Crossbreds are efficient and healthy cows. • Short calving interval , optimal body condition, medium sized. • Suitable for 2 or 3 way cross • Depends on what kind of cow you like • Crossbreeding is an innovative management tool to increase your profit!

  35. Red breeds • Be different • Focus on health , animal welfare • Low / no antibiotic use • Invest in data collecting • Expect big marked share for: • Milk from cows which are healthy by nature • Able to produce milk with a authentic image from green gras silage and pasture.
