  2. Why Consider Gender? Sustainable economic development means paying attention to the groups of people who are often marginalized by development projects or further harmed by potential unintended consequences such as increased alcohol consumption, domestic violence and prostitution. Resource development projects can have a significant impact on the health and well-being of women, influenced by a broad range of cultural, social, economic and environmental factors.

  3. Gender Equality Reference Group By consulting with a wide-range of stakeholders to assess potential risks, impacts and opportunities related to a mining project, project proponents can get a better understanding of all the potential impacts the project may have on a community. Setting up a gender equality reference group for mining consultation is important to identify and assess, integrate, track and communicate impacts on women and vulnerable groups.

  4. Questions to Consider in Planning What strategies and policies exist at the national and subnational level to promote gender equality? Has there been any analysis or impact studies done on gender? Are there any critical issues or human rights violations identified by the community or region that could be further affected by a mining project? Is there any sex-disaggregated data available? Does the consultation team have women involved?

  5. Questions to Consider in Process Is there equal representation of women and men in the process? Are there barriers and constraints that may limit the participation of women and men? Will the consultation process support the active involvement of women and men? Are there methods of consultation that could be used to engage all participants including those who do not usually speak in front of large groups?

  6. Questions for Documentation and Reporting Have the views of all participants been recorded? Have women and men been included as part of the analysis to ensure no unintended gender bias? Does the report fairly present the views expressed by participants during the consultation process? Do the recommendations address any gender or cultural issues or gaps that may have been raised?
