Asthma educator certification exam was developed by the NAECB to:

  • standardize asthma education
  • evaluate effectiveness of certified

educators in disease management

  • secure third party reimbursement for

asthma education

Who is Eligible?

Candidates must meet one of two requirements:

  • 1. Licensed or credentialed health

care professional:

Physicians (MD, DO) Physicians Assistants (PA-C) Nurse Practitioners (NP) Nurses (RN, LPN) Respiratory Therapists (RRT,CRT) Pulmonary Function Techs (CPFT, RPFT) Pharmacists (RPh) Social Workers (CSW) Health Educators (CHES) Physical Therapists (PT) Occupational Therapists (OT)

Who is Eligible?

Candidates must meet one of two requirements: 2. Individuals providing professional asthma education, counseling or coordination services with a minimum of 1,000 hours experience in these activities

Individuals applying under this provision must have hours documented and notarized by a supervisor

  • NAECB exam is offered at 110 Applied

Measurement Professionals, Inc (AMP) Assessment Centers in the U.S. and Puerto Rico

  • Submit application and fee
  • Apply online at www.goAMP.com
  • Exam is given Mon-Friday 9 am-1:30pm
  • 3.5 hour time limit for exam
  • Online exam

AE-C Exam Fees

Initial Examination $295.00 Recertification $245.00 Repeat exam $195.00 AE-C recertification required every 7 years

If candidate fails, there is a waiting period

  • f 90 days with a maximum of 3 attempts

in 1 year

First AE-C exam given Sept 2002 As of December 31, 2008:

  • 2,558 candidates have passed
  • 95 Asthma Educator-Certified in

Massachusetts (National pass rate 68%)

AE-C Exam Currently Based on EPR 2

Statement from NAECB 1/15/2008

  • AE-C exam questions are all currently based on

the EPR2 guidelines from the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP)

  • Exam questions related to the newly released

EPR3 guidelines will be “tested” on the exam version released during the second half of 2008. However, those questions will be pre-test items

  • nly and will not contribute to a passing or failing

score on the examination.

  • Most likely, the exam content based on the

EPR3 guidelines will be released in the 2009 summer exam version.
