Meet College Admissions Rep Here at PHS! ● Admission officers from many colleges, universities, and military branches visit PHS ● View Naviance for frequent updates ● Sign up in the white binder in guidance , and get a pass signed from your teachers (And sign up in Naviance) ● Attend any visits for colleges you plan to apply to!!! ● Listen to student announcements and check the guidance blackboard for information on visits ●

  7. College Visits - What to say? Some ideas….. ● Ask questions that can’t be answered on line ● Do you meet 100% financial need? ● Do you have “my” major? ● What’s the atmosphere at this school? ● What do students do on weekends? ● What courses/grades/ need to get in to your school?

  9. Four Year vs. Two Year College Four Year Two Year College Application Application doesn’t require an essay. SAT Scores (if required) Application doesn’t require Essay recommendation letters. Teacher Recommendations For this year only, the college will accept both Accuplacer and SAT Counselor Recommendation scores for admission.

Gap Year/Military/Other Options ● You do not have to go to college in order to have a successful and happy life. ● Gap Years, the military, apprenticeships, and going to work can be viable options as well. ● What makes a Gap year successful: ● Completed college applications, admissions and deferment ● A good plan.

Creating/Finalizing Your Post Secondary Plan ● We recommend most students applying to four year colleges apply to 4 to 10 colleges ● Balance your list with an equal amount of reach, good bet and safety colleges. Consider financial aid safety colleges as well. ● Check the data on Naviance or Collegeboard and with your counselors which colleges fit in each category for you ● Research military, work, and gap year options

  12. Types of Admission ● Rolling Admission -no specific deadline. It is best to submit the application in the fall. ● Regular Decision -most students are notified by the spring ● Early Action -non-binding. Can apply to more than one school. Many applications are due in November. Financial aid due early, too. ● Early Decision -binding contract and commitment to one school only. Most applications are due in November and most decisions are shared by late December. Financial Aid due early, too. (Sign up today to see your counselor early)

  13. What’s in a college application/Who sends the part? 1. Transcript /other school materials (Guidance-after student puts in Naviance and asks counselor) 2. Test Scores (Student through College Board generally) 3. Recommendations (Teachers, after student asked in person and on Naviance and gave a deadline. Students must complete Counselor and Teacher Rec Questionnaires) 4. Application and fee/fee waiver (Student, see your counselor if you need a written fee waiver-not commonapp schools because they ask on commonapp) 5. Essay If applicable, interview and supplemental materials(Student)

Naviance student.naviance.com/phsme ● Naviance is more mobile/user friendly this year ● Keep college info updated to receive notices about college visits and scholarship opportunities ● Transcripts, counselor recommendations and teacher recommendations are sent through Naviance ● Includes a helpful “To Do” List and research tools

  15. Request a Transcript Through Naviance ● Confirm with your counselor (by email or in person) when you plan to apply. (The more notice you give, the better your letter will be!) ● Link your Common App and Naviance accounts: Access your commonapp.org account and complete the privacy/FERPA notice for the Commonapp. ● Enter “Colleges I’m thinking about” first and then move the right ones to “Colleges I’m applying to” and indicate if you are applying early or regular decision. Let us know if you have submitted your application, and request your transcript. ● Requesting a transcript does not mean you have asked your counselor for a recommendation. Your counselor sends your transcript at the same time as her recommendation, at least two weeks after you fill out your questionnaire.

  20. Interview ● Check with each college to determine if interviews are required or recommended ● If a school recommends an interview, arrange one, bring a resume, dress nicely, and ask questions

NCAA Clearinghouse/Sports ● Division 1 or 2 schools (not Division III) ● Eligibility Center ● Complete Registration and transcript release form (you can request on Naviance) ● Final eligibility is granted after graduation by the NCAA ● At Division III school, your athletic skills and talents can help you become accepted IF you contact the coach

  22. STEM Endorsement ● Review and Submit Application to Guidance ● Transcript will show “On Track for STEM Endorsement” once application is turned in; once capstone is completed, it will be changed to STEM endorsement
