Four Year vs. Two Year College

Four Year

Application SAT Scores (if required) Essay Teacher Recommendations Counselor Recommendation

Two Year College

Application doesn’t require an essay. Application doesn’t require recommendation letters. For this year only, the college will accept both Accuplacer and SAT scores for admission.

Gap Year/Military/Other Options

  • You do not have to go to college in order to have a

successful and happy life.

  • Gap Years, the military, apprenticeships, and going to work

can be viable options as well.

  • What makes a Gap year successful:
  • Completed college applications, admissions and deferment
  • A good plan.
slide-11
SLIDE 11

Creating/Finalizing Your Post Secondary Plan

  • We recommend most students applying to four year

colleges apply to 4 to 10 colleges

  • Balance your list with an equal amount of reach, good bet

and safety colleges. Consider financial aid safety colleges as well.

  • Check the data on Naviance or Collegeboard and with your

counselors which colleges fit in each category for you

  • Research military, work, and gap year options
slide-12
SLIDE 12

Types of Admission

  • Rolling Admission-no specific deadline. It is best to submit

the application in the fall.

  • Regular Decision-most students are notified by the spring
  • Early Action-non-binding. Can apply to more than one
  • school. Many applications are due in November. Financial

aid due early, too.

  • Early Decision-binding contract and commitment to one

school only. Most applications are due in November and most decisions are shared by late December. Financial Aid due early, too. (Sign up today to see your counselor early)

SAT

  • Most colleges want you to

send your SAT scores directly from the College Board website, in addition to self reporting the scores on the commonapp.

  • If you are applying to an

SAT/ACT optional school, decide if you are sending scores.

  • Check Fairtest.org for a list of

colleges that are test optional. AP

  • You can choose to self report

your AP scores on your common application.

  • Individual colleges and not the

College Board, grant course credit and placement based on qualifying scores
