Commodores report Focus of the club 2018-2019 To put things into correct time frames, the clubs focus from 2015 to 2017 was firmly on retaining our position on Vetch’s pier and at the same time doing necessary repairs and renovations to save the town club from falling apart. The amount of time and effort that went into these two aspects of the club was extraordinary to say the least You can look around you at what has been done here and it is clearly noticeable how much dedication and hard work has gone into bringing this club back to its former glory. 2017 to date has been a term where we have focused on completing the task of upgrading the club and then getting the club onto a better financial and more sustainable platform We started by putting in stronger management systems to firstly ensure that the physical state of the club itself is correctly maintained and improving the financial control within the club To this end I must thank Lydia Salt, Darryl and his team for their hard work Further to this a special thanks to the trustees Vernon Goss, Dave Cuthbert and Gavin Smith for their input with a special thanks to Rob Bowden for his time and expertise on the financial side. The model of the club has been changed substantially over the past 4 years to what I would like to describe as a contract type business.

slide-11
SLIDE 11

In my layman's terms we have changed from being a jobbing operation to a rental

  • peration.

In this way we have fixed monthly income, we have been able to reduce overheads substantially and have a more predictable results . The main goal was to have a club that could weather the storms of the unpredictable economy that plague our country right now, but the secondary , and will be the most important factor in the next few years, is to grow our sport which will lead to growth in membership. One cannot concentrate on growing the club and it activities when we are running around plugging leaks and fending off attacks on our membership base. The challenge for the incoming committee is to grow the membership base, a task which is not at all easy in todays economy. We have a bit of a chicken and egg situation developing in that our club fees have increased substantially to sustain the club , however if we get more membership and membership support we can reduce the fees to make it more attractive to join our club.

slide-12
SLIDE 12

Ski Boat/Paddlers/SUP The new ski boat members have really embraced the PYC as their new home and have enthused a strong club character amongst their group. A new walk on has been positioned down the side of the slipway to enable people to get on and off boats without having to wade into the water. Land has been reclaimed in the boat park so that trailers can be parked without impeding on the thoroughfare It must be noted that these improvements , although motivated by the ski boat section, are not specifically beneficial to only that division but to all the disciplines within the club The area will not only be used to park trailers , but is intended for the use of members who are hauling out and working on their own boats The extra space will be a big asset at regatta time when we need the extra parking I would like to thank them for their club spirit and for all the work that has gone into improving the boat park I am standing for rear commodore paddling this year in an effort to build the paddling section within the club. The sport of surf ski paddling is growing rapidly on an international basis and as a multidiscipline water sports club I would like to explore growing this division

slide-13
SLIDE 13

SAS We have been in arrears with our SAS levies in recent years, this has now been brought up to date and we are now in good standing . Club Catering I must congratulate Nick and Eric of Eat Greek for their outstanding catering at PYC. There were some major challenges earlier this year when we had the pollution spill in the harbour and it was decided to shut down catering due to the spill creating a health hazard This severly impacted on their operation ,but they stood by the club, and I want to express my appreciation to them The Friday Pie days have proved successful and I want to ask members to support them further and re-establish the popularity of the famous PYC Pie Pollution spill As most of you know we hade a severe effluent spill down lavender creek into to harbour. This had a major impact on the club and its service providers We explored the route of compensation via our insurance brokers , but unfortunately we were not successful.

slide-14
SLIDE 14

We also applied to the city for relief but to date our request has fallen on deaf ears Our major goal was to get relief for the service providers so that they would not be so heavily impacted, but also to get relief for PYC for the lack of trade and income over that period Marina The Marina continues to be well run, we still only have one Director, Nigel Miln, and we need to elect another director to the board. The dredger is well on its way and we hope that it will be completed by the end of the year I would like to thank Nigel for the time and effort that he puts into the marina of PYC’s behalf. RNYC /PYC affiliation talks Nigel Miln and his team have gone to great lengths to try and find common ground between the two clubs and to date a complete solution is yet to be found On behalf of all the members I want to thank all of those involved for their effort and hope that they find some success for all the time put into this . We must be mindful that our goal in this joining of clubs is to strengthen our sport and we never expected this to be easy and we will continue trying

slide-15
SLIDE 15

Beach site We are entering into an exciting phase with our new beach site becoming a reality. This is a huge undertaking for the Club and a lot of time and effort has gone into making this happen. The work so far is just the tip of the iceberg but we will endeavour to make it a venue that

  • ur members want to use

Peter Hall and committee have been driving this initiative and I urge all members to give him your support . I would like to take a leaf out of the ski boaters book and urge members to donate their time and services to help us make this a reality A group effort will unify the club and will give us a better physical result Conclusion This has been an interesting term of office for me in that we have faced many challenges and changes within the club These two years have proven that if you surround yourself with good people and empower them to get the job done , the job will be done.

slide-16
SLIDE 16

I have had a very strong committee and very good staff to work with and it has made leading the club a very simple exercise I want to thank Gencom , Darryl and his staff, the Trustees and all the contractors that work within the club for making my term of office a pleasurable one I hope that the incoming Commodore will be blessed with the same support that I have had and that his term of office is a great success and a pleasure to be part of.

Keeler Committee Report 2018/2019 Season This past years’ sailing was once again a mixed bag of yachts participation. Series Some races in a series were well supported then others not. The usual culprit, the weather mostly to blame but also a concerning amount of sailing apathy. Port Captain Sprints had a total number of 18 boats entre however seldom was there more than half that number on the start line. This was the trend for most Caney Series, Sigma Series and Longhaul’s (Over the Horizon) and the Jonsey Sprints. It is seemingly that what sailors want are quality races, with maximum participation instead

  • f lots of races with few entries. This coming season this needs to be addressed as a priority.

The formation of ORC Ocean 1 group went a long way to ensuring increase interest in participation, good racing and banter in the bar after. Classes drive participation as such the push to have boats ORC certified will continue. With this we are in the early stages of the formation of the ORC 2 group. Wednesday Night Wednesday Night Fun sailing remains popular. Weather again plays a vital part especially during the September to January months. A big thanks to Ron who ran racing, did the scoring and results and prizegiving after. Great to have Ron onboard so the rest of us can go sailing.

slide-18
SLIDE 18

Cruising Participation in Cruising regattas was poor with mainly the few usual suspects getting

  • involved. Thanks to Struan for recently championing the cause of cruising and we look

forward to more cruising and Distance races in the coming season. Lipton Cup This year PYC did not have an entry into Lipton due to the expense involved and the decision by the Keeler Committee not to ‘pimp’ the PYC burgee. PYC was approached for a yacht to sail under PYC burgee but the team also wanted vast sums of money at their disposal. This was never going to fly! The new formula and boats for Lipton Cup, although exciting pose challenges to clubs which don’t have access to the expensive yachts. The club will have to assess best way forward to continue to have a presence at The Lipton Cup in the future. Iconic Regattas MSC Regatta – Thanks once again to the generous sponsorship from MSC this regatta was able to take place. Although boat numbers were less than in the past the number of people sailing was up. This primarily due to the increase number of bigger boats participating. Weather really did the regatta no favors’ with either too much wind or too little non the less great fun was had by all.

slide-19
SLIDE 19

Vasco de Gama Race – This year’s Vasco is under the ‘control’ of RN. Currently PYC are not able to confirm if it is taking place. Should it not take place, the PYC will approach RN to undertake the race next year as the race is still within their control period. Discussions have been had to form a joint Vasco committee going forward. Inter Varsity This regatta keeps going from strength to strength. Thanks much to the efforts of Ed de Lange. A total

  • f 10 teams and around 70 students participated. Competitive team sailing is matched only by the

festivities off the water. Say No More. Club boats L26’s – the 3 club L26’s are being well utilized by DUC, Glenwood and Varsity students mainly. The L26’s remain one of the largest fleets with more that 6 boats on Wednesday nights and other series. Dusky – Sadly Dusky was sold due to lack of use. General A big thank you to a somewhat diminished Keeler Committee especially Mike Surgison, Robyn Hulley and Craig Millar and of course Gill Campbel who assists so kindly always. ORC certification should continue to be encouraged. No rating system is perfect but while sailors are not sailing perfectly the ORC system meets our needs and should be embraced. Constructive input is always welcome. Criticizing from the boundaries is not. Volunteer your services to ‘Make Sailing Great Again’

PYC DINGHY SAILING 2018/2019 SEASON REPORT FOR AGM It is with regret that this season’s report is dominated by the same factors as the preceding 2 years – being disappointingly poor support of Club events by dinghy sailors. Again this was in addition to the usual batch of sailing days blown out by excessive breeze, while we also lost 3 full months of sailing due to the extensive sewerage spill which started on the Easter weekend. Voting with one’s feet is arguably the strongest way of expressing one’s sentiments, but if those planning and running the sailing calendar are to be expected to deliver what sailors want, it is essential that constructive feedback is provided to them. Unfortunately, almost no feedback was forthcoming from sailors. The one-off pursuit races, being the Jonsson Cup and Bar Anniversary Mug again proved to be the most popular events on the calendar, while regular fleet racing events seldom saw more than 10 boats on the water on an afternoon. Efforts were made to introduce a race entry system, particularly to make life easier for race management and record keeping, but there were still numerous sailors who failed to comply. Through running the Hobie 16 Nationals offshore during April we were able to determine that the running cost of our 3 support boats is in the region of R2,000 per day. Certainly in-harbour racing incurs lower running costs, but there will always be unavoidable costs associated with running racing.

slide-21
SLIDE 21

However, there were still a number of sailors who joined in the sailing on occasions, but never contributed toward these running costs. I cannot agree with those critics who expressed the view that the costs of running dinghy racing should be recouped from general membership fees, and have to state my view that the fairest arrangement is for costs to be covered by those participating in a particular event or watersport discipline. There has been a concerted effort between Keeler, Dinghy and Youth sailing organisers to design and deliver an entirely different format of sailing calendar in the new season. We are expecting to have our new beach site available to us in the not too distant future, so an Easter Regatta for dinghies is intended. It is hoped that this new calendar format will result in higher levels of participation in all events. I conclude with a massive vote of thanks to those members who gave freely of their time to serve on bridge and support boats throughout the season, enabling the rest of us to have fun on the water. Thanks too to the Dinghy Sailing Committee who remain largely intact to continue to serve under the new Rear Commodore. I wish you every success.

YOUTH SAILING 2018-2019 This past season has seen some very exciting times in sailing for PYC youth. After Bart's Bash, the opening of the new season and a few races, Connor McLoughlin and Blain Dunbar participated in Youth Nationals in the Cape. The HMYC grand slam always proves to be a fantastic event and saw youth sailors from all

  • ver the country. PYC optimist sailors were put to the test and were shown what is was like to

sail hard and the importance of knowing the rules of racing. Hobbie and Laser Nationals were held offshore Durban with participants Theresa Vermaak , crewing for Justin Butler , and Vincent Vermaak sailing in the Laser 4.7 class. Thank you to members for encouraging the youth to participate in these events as well as Laser association for providing the equipment to make it all possible. The event also saw participants from Mozambique , providing our optimist sailors, Blain, Connor, Maggie and Marcel with a fantastic experience. Thank you to Jeromy and the

  • ptimist association for providing good boats and rigs for these big events.

Besides regular Saturday training and sailing, the next big event was the ZYC grand slam which always proves that KZN is most certainly the place to be during winter. This was shortly followed by the PYC grand slam.

slide-23
SLIDE 23

A surprising email came from PYC member, Clive Walker, father of youth sailor, Ian Walker, currently living in Spain, asking permission to continue to sail Optimist world championships in Antiqua, the Caribbean, under the PYC burgee. Needless to say that I absolutely encouraged it and some of us on the PYC Optimist WhatsApp group followed the racing results daily. The event saw sailors from all over the world with over 250 boats on the start line. Ian finished in the top five, winning three of his races . As of 25 August 2019, Connor McLoughlin is participating in the Optimist African Championships in Mahe, Seychelles, and we whish him the best. What Jerome does not know, is that the current youth commodore has plans to get Connor A LOT of time on the water, training offshore, hopefully seeing another youth participating in even more world class events . The PYC youth has been well supported by Sail Africa as well as SAS . Cay, from SAS, has encouraged us to start the process of applying for funding from the department of sports and recreation to update our equipment . Hopefully we will be able to have our own team sailing boats here at our club. The first part

  • f the process will take approximately ten months, and I am hoping to have a fleet of at least

6 boats within two years. Thank you Cay and Debbie from SAS and thank you Jackie from Sail Africa.

slide-24
SLIDE 24

With good old Trevor Gibb still at the helm of Saturday morning coaching , we have attracted the attention of outsiders; parents from other clubs and the sea cadets and the continual attendance of the boys from Glenwood High. As a result we are gaining members , as well as very capable parents and assistant coaching. Thank you Cornell Pretorius and Tim Atwell . Interaction with other clubs has been very positive, the Grandslams are always vey memorable and puts a smile on your face for days to follow and whenever you think about these events, not to mention offshore and interschools . Looking forward to 2020, talk of South Africa hosting the RS Terra world championships near Mosselbay and a rumor of youth nationals offshore Durban in December 2020.

Power Boat Section Report 2018/2019 For the 2018/2019 year the Power Boat Section has been a work in progress, assessing requirements to enable members to partake in their sport and getting these requirements implemented. We have finalized the following projects in the 2018/2019 year:-  Completion of the Boat Shelter Complex incorporating 20 Boat Shelters which are fully subscribed and will contribute R129 600.00 in revenue for the 2020 financial year.  Finalisation with the Port Authority to allow Category D vessels to enter and exit the port.  Completion of the Walk-on on the North side of the slipway for ease of access for all members.  Affiliation to the NDSAA which will allow us to fish competitively representing PYC.  Incorporation into the PYC Constitution. All the above would not have been possible without the support of the Section Committee, Gen Com and club management and I would like to thank them for their support. The highlight of the year was our inaugural PYC Fishing Competition held in June in which 19 Ski Boats and 2 Yachts with a total of 57 anglers participated.

slide-26
SLIDE 26

Whilst restricted to club members only it was a highly successful and enjoyable event and next year we hope to open to non-members and hopefully have more yachts participating as

  • well. We look forward this to becoming an annual event on the Calendar.

During our affiliation process with the NDSAA, we met with senior officials of the NDSAA at

  • PYC. They were most impressed with our club and have and will be making use of our

premises for events in the future. The outcome of this is that we have been awarded the hosting of the SADSAA Junior Game Fish Nationals in March 2020 – this will be a boost for the club and the success of this event will result in us hosting more national and provincial events in the future. Now that the spade work is over the focus for the year ahead will to be to grow membership and to form senior and junior competitive teams to represent PYC and hopefully achieve some Provincial and National Colours.

PYC – Paddling Section Report : 2018 – 2019

The Paddlers at PYC have integrated successfully with the rest of the club and there is a very good relationship between the Paddlers, Sailors and Ski Boat fisherman. Unfortunately, due to the ever dwindling numbers in Canoeing in general, the Tuesday evening Time Trials have not been well attended over the past year. The Time Trial continues to take place however and all paddlers and those wanting to learn how to paddle is welcome to attend. The Time Trial starts at 17h00 every Tuesday. There were 3 paddling events that the paddlers were involved with in organising. First off, the Popes Challenge in November which is a river race that takes place on the Umgeni River, over a course that covers part of Day 2 of the Dusi Canoe Marathon. The 2nd event is the Bay Union King of the bay Surfksi race in May that takes place in Durban Harbour from the Silt Canal in Bayhead to marine Surf Lifesaving Club.

slide-28
SLIDE 28

The 3rd event is the Duncan Scotney Night Race in September which starts and finishes at the PYC, but due to lack of entries, this event had to be cancelled for the last 2 years. A suggestion was made to start a paddling development program at the PYC for all juniors in the hope to attract more people, especially young people, to the sport. For this purpose, surfki’s and canoes will be required and experienced paddlers to give of their time to assist in making this program work.
