Stanville Primary School Phonics Screening Check Meeting 6 th February 2019 Phonics Testing for Y1 Why? The government thinks testing is a positive thing that informs everyone about how well children and schools are doing of course not
Phonics Testing for Y1– Why? The government thinks testing is a positive thing that informs everyone about how well children and schools are doing… …of course not everyone agrees with this opinion!
- All children will be given 40 words to read
- Some of the words are real and some of the words
are fake (alien words)
- The children know if it is a fake word as there is a
picture of an alien next to it
- All of the words are made up of sounds they have
been taught in class
- Since the testing started the pass mark has been
32, but it could change anytime
Phonics Screening for Year 1
Phonics – benefits!
- Using phonics is one way that children learn to read
- It provides children with a strategy to use when they
have never seen a word before. Phonics– but…
- There are other ways in which children can learn to read,
but these are not tested.
- Also being able to read a word on its own is not the same
as being able to read a word in a sentence and give meaning to it.
Phonics – When and how long?
- The phonics Screening will take place the week
beginning Monday 10th June
- Each child will be tested on their own
- The same teacher will test all of the children in the
year group
- The screening lasts no longer than 15 minutes
Phonics Screening – What is the test like?
What your child is currently doing at school to prepare
Phonics Screening preparation
- All of the children in year 1 have a daily phonics session for 30
minutes
- Children are encouraged to use phonics during their daily English
lessons when reading and writing
- Past screening checks are used to check children’s phonics
progress and make sure that they are used to the screening format
- Children are targeted depending on their phonics screening
score and given small group or 1:1 phonics interventions
