About Petru Maior

  • Our patron Petru Maior (1760-1821) is considered one of

the most outstanding personalities of the Enlightenment in Transylvania.

  • His work include history, philosophy, linguistics, Christian

morals, secular and religious education. Maior was a clergyman himself.

  • born in Tirgu-Mures the son of the archpriest Gheorghe

Maior who, in turn, was the son of a lesser noble from Tarnaveni.

  • The impact of his historical approach was remarkable,

winning the respect of his enemies and stirring the enthusiasm of the new generation of intellectuals who prepared and were instrumental in the success of the Revolution of 1848.

  • In choosing Petru Maior's name as our patron we

acknowledge his intellectual and spiritual accomplishments as well as striving to continue in the tradition of the Enlightenment.

  • The University Library includes a

variety of Romanian and foreign documents.

  • 150 000 volumes, 13 000 of

these are periodicals. Its 4000 volumes

  • f old books dating from the 18th-19th

and the first half of the 20th century are also worth mentioning.

  • The library’s oldest document is a

French writing dating from 1763 and called „Le spectacle des beaux arts ou considérations touchant leur nature, leurs objets, leurs effets et leurs régles principales”, its author being M. Lacombe.
