Polling Question

Per PA law, when is a child able to switch from rear‐ facing to forward‐facing in a vehicle? a) Age one b) Age one and 20 pounds c) 20 pounds d) Age two e) 30 pounds

Age two

A child younger than two years of age shall be secured in a rear‐facing child passenger restraint system, to be used until the child outgrows the maximum weight and height limits designated by the car seat manufacturer. (Primary Law)

Why?

Research shows:

  • Children under the age of 2 years are 75% less

likely to die or sustain serious injury when they are in a rear‐facing seat (Pediatrics, 2008)

  • 2 year olds were five times safer riding rear‐facing

than 2 year olds riding forward‐facing (Injury Prevention, 2007)

So, why now?

  • In 2011, the American Academy of Pediatrics

(AAP) recommended that children ride rear‐ facing until age 2

  • States started to make a change:
  • California, 2015
  • New Jersey, 2015
  • Oklahoma, 2015
  • Pennsylvania, 2016
