Peer Support Overview

Over 20 Years of Building Healthier Communities

Over the last 18 years behavioral health has developed formal systems for training, certifying, and applying peer support. In 2001 Georgia created the first state certification and became the first state able to pay for peer support services through Medicaid. In 2007 CMS acknowledged peer support as an evidence-based practice. As integrated healthcare has grown substantially since the advent of the ACA, peer support has expanded into primary care.

Peer Support Overview

“Peer support complements and enhances primary care services by providing practical, social and emotional support to help people do the things needed in order to live healthy lives.” Managing chronic health conditions often requires substantial changes in

  • behavior. Routine visits with a primary care provider assists people to

understand the steps that they can take to successfully self-manage their illnesses. Well trained peer specialists can assist these individuals implement and sustain the changes, and to develop person-centered plans that increase the likelihood of success.

Peer Support Overview

Over 20 Years of Building Healthier Communities

Statistical information drawn from Medicaid managed care programs has shown significant reductions in re-hospitalization rates and emergency room visits. It has also shown strong increases in satisfaction with services, improved quality

  • f life, and strengthened self-management.

Peer specialists can provide whole health support and increase the efficacy of primary care.

Peer Specialist History in Wyoming Training

Over 20 Years of Building Healthier Communities

The first Wyoming training was held in the Spring of 2016. Wyoming Peer Specialists, in collaboration with others, helped to create the training curriculum based on national standards and with Core Competencies and Ethics that provide the foundation for this evidenced-based practice.

In 2015 Wyoming was awarded a SAMHSA funded BRSS TACS grant to establish an evaluation system for peer specialist services and to create the curriculum for the Wyoming Peer Specialist Training.
