Over the last 18 years behavioral health has developed formal systems for training, certifying, and applying peer support. In 2001 Georgia created the first state certification and became the first state able to pay for peer support services through Medicaid. In 2007 CMS acknowledged peer support as an evidence-based practice. As integrated healthcare has grown substantially since the advent of the ACA, peer support has expanded into primary care.

“Peer support complements and enhances primary care services by providing practical, social and emotional support to help people do the things needed in order to live healthy lives.” Managing chronic health conditions often requires substantial changes in
understand the steps that they can take to successfully self-manage their illnesses. Well trained peer specialists can assist these individuals implement and sustain the changes, and to develop person-centered plans that increase the likelihood of success.

2005- First Wyoming Peer Specialists hired 2007- Peer Specialist services became Medicaid billable in Wyoming 2007- Wyoming Peer Specialist Certification

The first Wyoming training was held in the Spring of 2016. Wyoming Peer Specialists, in collaboration with others, helped to create the training curriculum based on national standards and with Core Competencies and Ethics that provide the foundation for this evidenced-based practice.
In 2015 Wyoming was awarded a SAMHSA funded BRSS TACS grant to establish an evaluation system for peer specialist services and to create the curriculum for the Wyoming Peer Specialist Training.
