Introduction This project will resurface damaged asphalt and make safety improvements

  • n both Oregon 38

and U.S. 101 in the Reedsport area.

Oregon 38 road surface The section of Oregon Highway 38 between Reedsport and Dean Creek was last paved in 1999. The asphalt is cracking and in need

  • f repair. This project

will grind and pave this 5.9-mile area.

Replacing guardrail The guardrail along Highway 38 is old, damaged and rusted. All guardrail between Reedsport and Dean Creek will be replaced.

Paving downtown Reedsport This project will also resurface the cracked asphalt in the downtown area.

Oregon 38 at 3rd Street Highway 38 motorists are often speeding when they enter town. Wide intersections can make it difficult for pedestrians to safely cross the street. To address these problems, curb extensions will be constructed at several downtown intersections.

slide-9
SLIDE 9

Curb extensions improve safety Curb extensions improve safety by reducing the distance pedestrians need to travel to cross the street. The narrower roadway helps calm traffic and promote lower vehicle speeds.

slide-10
SLIDE 10

New curb extensions at 3rd Street New curb extensions will be built near the Post Office, making it safer and easier for pedestrians to cross Highway 38. The curb extensions will also help reduce the speed of highway traffic entering downtown.

slide-11
SLIDE 11

Curb extensions at 4th and 5th street Curb extensions will be added to the 4th Street and 5th Street intersections.

slide-12
SLIDE 12

Three roads converge at 6th Street The 6th Street intersection with Fir Avenue and Oregon 38 can be confusing since three streets meet at one wide location.

slide-13
SLIDE 13

Improving the 6th Street intersection A 50-foot wide curb extension will be built to separate Fir Avenue and 6th Street. An additional curb extension will follow the sweeping curve of Highway 38 from 6th Street to 5th Street.

Extend sidewalks from downtown to U.S. 101 The downtown sidewalks currently end at 6th Street. This project will add sidewalks and streetlights on both sides of the highway from 6th Street to the U.S. 101 intersection.

Changing lanes

U.S. Highway 101 improvements

slide-16
SLIDE 16

Four lanes on U.S. 101 Highway 101 takes up four lanes through uptown Reedsport, between Schofield Bridge and the high school. This leaves little room for bicycles, parking or vehicles trying to make left turns.

slide-17
SLIDE 17

New traffic pattern on U.S. 101 The area between 16th St. and 22nd St. will be restriped. The new layout will include one lane of travel in each direction, a center turn lane, bike lanes and parking on both sides of the highway.

slide-18
SLIDE 18

The Port Orford experiment The City of Port Orford recently asked ODOT to restripe U.S. 101 with the same traffic pattern that Reedsport will use. The results have been encouraging . . .

What they’re saying

Public comments on Port Orford’s new traffic pattern

slide-20
SLIDE 20

How has traffic changed in Port Orford? “This has finally calmed the traffic down.” “It is wonderful to see people slowing down and it’s so much safer to have a turn lane.” “It no longer feels like a freeway race going through town.”

slide-21
SLIDE 21

Pedestrian safety in Port Orford “I feel much safer crossing only two lanes of traffic instead of 4 lanes.” “It feels like I have a safety zone in the turn lane as I walk across the highway.” “Cars are able to see me better when I am crossing the highway.”

slide-22
SLIDE 22

Bike safety in Port Orford “In the past I rode on the sidewalk. Now, I feel it is safe to ride in the bike lane.” “It is much clearer where cars and bicycles belong.” “This change lets tourists know that biking is another great thing to do in Port Orford.”

slide-23
SLIDE 23

Parking in Port Orford “When I park in front of a business on Highway 101, I feel much safer opening up my car door. Now the bike lane provides an extra buffer of space.” “No more stepping directly out into a lane of busy highway traffic.” “I can exit my car without fear of a motor home or other vehicle striking me.”

Traffic signal at 19th Street Reedsport’s new three-lane traffic pattern will require some changes along Highway 101. The traffic signal at 19th Street will be adjusted to serve one lane in each direction.

slide-26
SLIDE 26

Replace traffic signal at 22nd Street At the south end of Reedsport, this project will replace the traffic signal at 22nd Street.

slide-27
SLIDE 27

Curb extensions at 22nd Street Curb extensions will be built at 22nd Street, providing more safety for pedestrians near the Reedsport Community Charter School. The curb extensions will also help slow northbound highway traffic as it enters Reedsport.

slide-28
SLIDE 28

Improving safety at 20th Street Many pedestrians cross the highway at 20th Street since there is a popular convenience store on one side and a park on the other.

slide-29
SLIDE 29

Flashing beacon for pedestrians To improve safety for pedestrians crossing the highway, curb extensions will be built at 20th Street and a rapid flashing pedestrian beacon will be installed.
