Policing in a Global Environment

Global criminal environment today is complex, borderless and fluid. With criminal groups active at local, national and international levels, investigations and operations are increasingly likely to have an International context. The AFP provides a first point of contact for all overseas law enforcement enquiries via avenues including:

  • International Network;
  • INTERPOL/EUROPOL; and
  • Pacific Transnational Crime Network.

Primary Purpose Establish and ensure continuity of relationships. Key Elements Brokering collaboration with international law enforcement agencies to drive investigations and support bilateral or multi- lateral cooperation. Collection and exchange of information and criminal intelligence in support of international law enforcement efforts. Enhancing capacity and capability of international law enforcement agencies to combat transnational crime.

International Interaction

Police-to-Police Assistance Informal processes which allows law enforcement agencies to share information and conduct related operational activities quickly and informally. INTERPOL/EUROPOL Provides a mechanism for undertaking routine enquiries that do not require specific police-to-police engagement. Mutual Assistance Process of government to government assistance in criminal investigations and prosecutions.

Effectiveness

  • AFP, ABF and RAN have an excellent relationship, exchanging

information and intelligence - countering people smuggling.

  • AFP Intelligence Analyst into CTF150 between Jan-Apr 2016. This

identified the value of having law enforcement analyst working with military on operations and intelligence exchange.

  • AFP will be embedding an Intelligence Analyst full time into RNIFC

from December 2016.

  • AFP has been working with RAN to have samples seized from dhows.

Analysed and entered into a database in Australia in order we can link seizures made in Australia to these syndicates in the Indian Ocean region and Africa

targeting Australia

  • Opportunities are exchanging information and intelligence on OCG/CT
