STELLAR: Strategies for English Language Learning and Reading

slide-22
SLIDE 22

The STELLAR Vision

Children who

  • love reading and
  • have a strong foundation in the English

Language

slide-23
SLIDE 23

English Curriculum

  • 1. Shared Reading Experiences

Children read storybooks with the teacher and engage in oral discussions with teacher and peers.

  • 2. Shared Writing Experiences

The teacher models writing using children’s

  • language. Children engage in writing

together and in writing independently.

slide-24
SLIDE 24

Books

  • open up the world for children
  • help children to think and wonder
  • increase children’s vocabulary and knowledge

about the world around them

  • provide good examples for reading and

writing Why Books?

slide-25
SLIDE 25

STELLAR Needs Parents’ Support

  • Role models – read and write notes and

messages in front of your child.

  • Understanding – English Language learning

requires frequent exposure to listening, speaking, reading and writing opportunities and activities rather than use of worksheets alone.

slide-30
SLIDE 30

There will be no examinations for English in Primary 1 . Daily lessons, learning activities and experiences in class will enable teachers to have a holistic understanding of pupils’ progress by

  • 1. observing pupils’ demonstration of positive

learning dispositions.

  • 2. supporting pupils’ acquisition of learning
  • utcomes.
slide-31
SLIDE 31

MATHEMATICS

slide-32
SLIDE 32

The mathematics curriculum aims to enable our pupils to:

  • 1. Acquire mathematical concepts and skills for everyday use

and continuous learning in mathematics;

  • 2. Develop thinking, reasoning, communication, application

and metacognitive skills through a mathematical approach to problem-solving;

  • 3. Build confidence and foster interest in mathematics.
slide-33
SLIDE 33

We hope that our Primary 1 pupils will experience meaningful and effective Math learning through the various programmes. Mathematics Programmes @ Jiemin

  • 1. Activity Based Lessons (ABL)

In ABL, we provide opportunities for pupils to make use of the manipulatives to develop mathematical concepts and skills progressively from the concrete and pictorial levels to the abstract level.

slide-34
SLIDE 34
  • 2. Factual Fluency

Pupils practice factual fluency to develop speed and accuracy in number facts like addition and subtraction within 20. Factual Fluency is carried out through fun card games and online quizzes.

  • 3. Heuristics Package

We adopt a structured approach in teaching pupils problem solving skills. In Primary 1, pupils are taught to label the part-whole model correctly to solve word problems.

slide-35
SLIDE 35
  • 4. Learning Support Programme for Mathematics (LSM)

LSM is an early intervention effort aimed at providing additional support to pupils who do not have foundational numeracy skills and knowledge to access the Primary 1 Math curriculum. Parents will be informed if their child is selected to be in the programme.

slide-36
SLIDE 36
  • 5. Math Recess Games

To motivate pupils to master their basic Mathematics facts through interaction with their peers in a fun and non-threatening environment, reducing the fear of failures and errors.

  • 6. Math Games Day

Provide a platform for pupils to play competitively against their classmates. Through games, pupils are motivated to participate and develop positive attitudes towards Mathematics.

slide-37
SLIDE 37

There will be NO EXAMS IN PRIMARY 1.

Daily lessons and learning experiences in class will enable teachers to:

  • 1. observe pupils’ demonstration of positive learning

disposition.

  • 2. support pupils’ acquisition of learning outcomes.
slide-38
SLIDE 38

Parents can support their child’s learning by

  • 1. Providing a positive environment. Always acknowledging

your child’s effort.

  • 2. Monitoring homework, asking questions that guide

without telling the answers.

  • 3. Playing mathematical games / quizzes that reinforce

memorisation of basic addition and subtraction facts.

  • 4. Encouraging your child to login to the Student Learning

Space (More details will be given at a later date)
