Importance of ITU-T Recommendations

Without ITU-T standards you couldn’t make a telephone call from one side of the world to another

• E.164 “International public telecommunication numbering plan”
• Q.700-series “Signalling System N. 7 (SS7)”
• Audio codecs (e.g. G.711, G.723.1, G.729, etc.)

Without ITU-T standards the Internet wouldn’t function

resistibility of 5G systems/technologies

• SG15 continues working on backhaul technologies for 5G

• SG12 currently is extending the standards to provide

support for ‘4K’ UHD video encoded using ITU-T H.264, ITU-T H.265 and VP9.

• New ITU-T X.1362 specifies a simple encryption

procedure for IoT environments

• New Recommendation ITU-T Y.4114 "Specific

requirements and capabilities of the IoT for Big Data"

Connected, automated vehicles

New and revised ITU standards specify the electrical-acoustical characteristics, performance requirements and test signals for hands-free communication in motor vehicles, as well as speech quality requirements for emergency calls originating from vehicles New ITU-T F.749.2 describes the service requirements and functional requirements for the vehicle gateway platform in the intelligent transport system New ITU-T X.1373 for the security of remote software updates for connected vehicles November 2017, new UN regulation on automatic emergency call system for road traffic accidents will reduce response times and save lives (reference to ITU-T P.1140) – it is expected to enter into force in June 2018 Future Networked Car symposium at Geneva Motor Show, 8 March 2018, in partnership with UNECE

Security and trust

• 8th edition of the ITU-T X.500-series, including X.509 digital

certificates

• Two new security standards define the telebiometric

authentication framework using a biometric hardware security module, and technical and operational countermeasures for telebiometric applications using mobile devices

• The first two ITU-T standards on trust (Y.3051 and Y.3052)

establish the basic principles of a trusted environment in ICT infrastructure and provide an overview of trust provisioning in ICT

New ITU-T X.1058 provides a code of practice for the protection of personally identifiable information based on ISO/IEC 27002 ITU Workshop on “Security aspects of blockchain” was held in Geneva, 21 March 2017

• New ITU-T L.1002 provides for environmentally friendly external

Electromagnetic fields (EMF)

Several new and revised standards in the ITU-T K-series provide EMC resistibility and safety limits of ICT equipment and infrastructure Three new standards (ITU-T K.118, K.119, K.120) define requirements for lightning protection of fibre to the distribution point equipment, as well as earthing for radio base stations and miniature base stations New ITU-T K.121 defines the EMC requirements for electrical systems in telecoms facilities

Conformity and interoperability

• A new guideline defines the ITU-T Conformity Assessment Steering

Systems and Schemes such as IEC and ILAC

• ITU-T CASC is currently developing guidelines to detail collaboration

mechanisms with accreditation bodies such as IECEE and ILAC

• ITU-T CASC established a list of ITU-T Recommendations - subjects for

future joint certification schemes (e.g. ITU-T P.1140, ITU-T P.1100, ITU-T P.1110 and K.116)

• ITU’s ‘ICT product conformity database’ contains more than 500 entries

covering e-health devices, mobile phones and Ethernet services

Conformity and interoperability

• New ITU-T Y.1545.1 provides guidance to assist regulators to monitoring the

QoS of IP network services offered by Internet service providers

• New Recommendation ITU-T Q.3960 “Framework for Internet related

performance measurements”

• SG16 started a new pilot project of conformity assessment against ITU-T

H.700-series IPTV

• SG16 has established an IPTV testing team for conformity testing of IPTV
• The IPTV testing team and Keio University conducted successful

conformance testing on ITU-T H.721 at the January 2017 meeting of SG16

• Collaboration agreement between ITU-T SG11 and ETSI TC INT is in force

• Fourth ITU test event on compatibility of mobile phones and vehicle’s hands-free

Combating counterfeiting

Survey report on counterfeit ICT devices in Africa was approved by ITU-T SG11 in February 2017

• Survey driven by TSB-BDT collaboration
• Survey response called for establishment of African Regional

Group within ITU-T SG11 SG11 continues developing Framework for combating counterfeiting of ICT and started a new work item which will define a framework for combating stolen ICT devices. The first framework is expected to be determined in July 2018 (under TAP) SG11 Workshop on combating counterfeit and stolen ICT (July 2018)

New ITU-T F.921 specifies key elements of audio-based network navigation systems for persons with vision impairments SG16 has launched work to revise ITU-T F.791 which provides accessibility terms and definitions Joint Coordination Activity on Accessibility and Human Factors (JCA-AHF) continues

Academia

Kaleidoscope 2017: Challenges for a data-driven society 27-29 November 2017, Nanjing, China Kaleidoscope 2016: ICTs for a Sustainable World was held 14-16 November 2016 co-located with ITU Telecom World in Bangkok, Thailand The ITU Journal: ICT Discoveries publishes original research on telecommunication/ICT technical developments and their policy and regulatory, economic, social and legal dimensions.

Collaboration

ITU and the NGMN Alliance cooperation agreement formalizes mutual commitment to the development of next-generation mobile broadband technologies and affirms NGMN’s support for ITU’s international standardization of 5G systems. The 16th meeting of the IEC/ISO/ITU World Standards Cooperation (WSC) took place on 16 February 2017 and was hosted by ITU. ETSI and ITU continue to enjoy successful collaboration involving SGs 5, 11 and 17

Collaboration

ITU cooperation agreement with the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) to cooperate on standardization activities on IoT and Smart Sustainable Cities, Intelligent Transportation Systems, and Trust, data protection and cybersecurity ITU has partnered with the World Bank and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in establishing the new multi-partisan Financial Inclusion Global Initiative (FIGI 3x3x3)
