  1. Overview of ITU-T standardization activities Denis ANDREEV TSB, Advisor of ITU-T SG11

  2. Importance of ITU-T Recommendations Without ITU-T standards you couldn’t make a telephone call from one side of the world to another • E.164 “International public telecommunication numbering plan” • Q.700-series “Signalling System N. 7 (SS7)” • Audio codecs (e.g. G.711, G.723.1, G.729, etc.) Without ITU-T standards the Internet wouldn’t function • G.9000 – G.9999 “Access Networks” (e.g. xDSL, GPON) Without video codecs it will be difficult to film movies with High Definition • H.265 (HEVC) – 8K UHD (resolution 8192 × 4320)

  3. Broadband access G.fast doubles in speed: ITU-T G.9701 Amd.3 increases G.fast’s capacity to 2 Gbit/s using spectrum up to 212 MHz 40G Fibre to the Home (NG-PON2) : First series of standards to provide broadband access beyond 10 Gbit/s Rural broadband: ITU-T L.1700 brings broadband to rural communities, leveraging lightweight optical fibre with a focus on ease of deployment, cost-efficiency and reliability. Broaband cable and TV: New standard for 4K UHD TV set-top boxes with a functional specification of such cable set-top boxes

  4. Fibre foundations Revisions to ITU-T G.652 and G.657 extend and optimize the use of these optical fibres beyond their current capabilities Revised ITU-T G.654, which traditionally dealt with the characteristics of fibres for submarine cables, includes a new subcategory of fibre (G.654.E fibre) to support coherent digital transmission systems in terrestrial optical networks at rates beyond 100 Gbit/s The new G-series Supplement 59 provides guidance relevant to the long-term reliability of cabled optical fibres

  5. IMT-2020/5G FG IMT-2020 concluded in December 2016 with delivery of five draft ITU international standards and four draft ITU technical reports SG13 created new Joint Coordination Activity on IMT-2020 SG13 has initiated 13 new work items , largely based on the outcomes of the Focus Group As of November 2017: • SG13 consented new ITU standards for network softwarization and fixed-mobile convergence In 2017, SG11, SG13 and SG15 • SG11 started new work items which will define signalling requirements conducted Workshops on 5G and relevant test specs for IMT-2020 control plane (architecture, control plane and SG5 continue developing environmental requirements for 5G • backhaul) technologies. SG5 approved EMF, energy efficiency and resistibility of 5G systems/technologies SG15 continues working on backhaul technologies for 5G • networks

  6. Networks & networking solutions Synchronized mobile backhaul networks for 4G, 5G and beyond (ITU-T G.8272.1/Y.1367.1) enables highly accurate time synchronization and high reliability ITU-T Y.3071 provides requirements and capabilities for Data Aware Networking for Information Centric Networking A new standard provides the requirements for service management in cloud-aware Telecommunication Management System SG11 consented new Recommendation on VoLTE/ViLTE interconnection and relevant testing specifications

Software Defined Networking New ITU-T Y.3301 and Y.3302 provide SDN functional requirements and functional architecture New ITU-T X.1038 defines the security requirements and a reference architecture for SDN New ITU-T Y.3323 on soft network architecture for mobile packet core network enables operators to improve the flexibility of their networks New ITU-T L.1360 defines the integration of a Green Abstraction Layer into the ITU-T Software-Defined Networking architecture ITU-T G.7701 describes commonalities in SDN and ASON network management-control

  8. Video and image coding ITU-T H.265 ‘High Efficiency Video Coding’ 4 th edition of H.265 adds extensions profiles for screen • content coding, scalable range extensions profiles, and additional high-throughput profiles SG16 and ISO/IEC MPEG ‘Call for Evidence’ supporting the case for next-generation video codec • Aiming to double the video compression capability of HEVC Standardization project horizon: 2020 • ITU, ISO and IEC receive another Primetime Emmy for video compression (High Efficiency Video Coding, HEVC)

  9. IPTV and Immersive Live Experience New ITU-T H.763.2 "Scalable vector graphics for IPTV services” New ITU-T J.302 specifies a system for augmented reality smart TV service enabling TV viewers to activate augmented content when desired SG16 launched work on Immersive Live Experience (ILE) systems to bring the sensation of live events to remote ITU150 poster competition for audiences, replicating the experience of being present at children, 2015 the event venue

  10. QoS of adaptive-bitrate video streaming New ITU-T P.1203 series provides model algorithms to monitor the quality of video streaming for both progressive-download and adaptive-bitrate video streaming SG12 currently is extending the standards to provide • support for ‘4K’ UHD video encoded using ITU-T H.264, ITU-T H.265 and VP9.

  11. IoT New ITU-T X.1362 specifies a simple encryption • procedure for IoT environments New Recommendation ITU-T Y.4114 "Specific • requirements and capabilities of the IoT for Big Data" New Recommendation ITU-T Y.4115 "Reference • architecture for IoT device capability exposure" New Recommendation ITU-T Y.4805 “Identifier service • requirements for the interoperability of Smart City applications”.
