RFC3919 RFC3919

  • "Remote Network Monitoring (RMON) Protocol Identifiers for IPv6 and Multi Protocol Label Switching

(MPLS)"

  • What is a protocol identifier ?

– Codification – Defined in RFC 2896 and RFC 2895

  • Why protocol identifiers ?

– Encourage better interoperability between RMON-2 agent implementations – produce valid protocolDirTable INDEX encodings; – Usage in Remote Network Monitoring MIB (Management Information Base) Version 2 [RFC2021]

  • Why IPv6 ?

– Avoid error during configurationIPIP6 IP6;

  • Success Story:

– 56th IETF:6QM partners identify RMON MIBs where not able to describe IPv6 capabilities; – 57th IETF: individual submission draft-stephan-ipv6-protocol-identifier-00.txt – 58th IETF WG Item: draft-ietf-rmonmib-pi-ipv6-01.txt – After 59th IETF WG last call: draft-ietf-rmonmib-pi-ipv6-02.txt – Before 60th IETF IESG Evaluation; draft-ietf-rmonmib-pi-ipv6-03.txt and 04 – After 60th IETF: RFC Queue – Before 61th IETF: It gained RFC in October 2004. Its number is RFC3919.

Spatial Spatial metrics metrics

Usage: just a narrow scope of usage !

– Active

  • a terminal and a node
  • A node and a terminal

– Passive

  • A node to a node

– Multicast tree – interdomain – Troubleshooting – …

Draft Status:

– need of spatial metrics definition became very urgent in IETF – request from chair to make archeology (see http://www.watersprings.org/pub/id/ ) – merge…

benefits:

– Network performance and QoS can be monitored – Compare results between different instruments – Interoperability between

  • instruments of different manufacturers
  • administrative domains
  • composite networks
  • IPv4 and IPv6 measures (NAT PT)
