Overview of the CBE BLabs

  • The labs support multi-disciplinary research and provide a platform to conduct

applied research in conjunction with CBE’s industry partners

  • Hub Governance Committee sets overall policies for the labs
  • User Group comprising of faculty members from all schools at CBE ensures

smooth operations of the labs

  • The labs were funded by MEC research grant and CBE Hub initiative
  • High level of admin and IT support is available

BLabs Infrastructure

  • Comprised of two distinct research labs: multi-purpose lab and advanced-

equipment lab

  • Multi-Purpose Lab:
  • 18 workstations with divider screens, plus a server for the researcher
  • Workstations networked and offer client-server environment
  • Tables can be rearranged for focus group type studies
  • Fitted with Smart TV
  • Software: Ztree, Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART), SPSS, AMOS
  • Advanced-Equipment Lab:
  • Fitted with fully climatised soundproof booth
  • Eye Tracker (Tobii TX300)
  • ECG & GSR (BiosignalsPlux)
  • FaceReader
  • StimTracker
  • Software: TobiiStudio, FaceReader 7, OpenSignals

Fulfil Prerequisites

Please make sure that you fulfil the following prerequisites before requesting to book a lab on your behalf:

– Ethics approval have been obtained. Ethics protocol number will be required upon making a booking request – General orientation has been completed (i.e., you have read the entire presentation and particularly understood Guidelines) – Have ensured that all software and hardware needed for the study are available. Request for the software/hardware that is not available in the BLabs by using ‘Request New Software/Hardware Form’ – Have booked a time to test the software and hardware needed for the study (‘Book to test software/hardware’). Please note you can test software/hardware from Monday-Friday 9:15 – 9:45am – Have obtained relevant training if your study involves advanced equipment in Advanced-Equipment Lab such as eye tracker, ECG, GSR or FaceReader (‘Book training for eye tracker, ECG/GSR, FaceReader’)

Make a Booking

  • See available time slots for the BLabs: BLab1_Calendar, BLab2_Calendar
  • Email the Lab Manager with your chosen time slots and dates: Booking_

Request_Form

  • You will receive a confirmation email once a booking is made on your behalf
  • If your booking request exceeds your allotted quota, the Lab Manager will offer you

available alternatives. You can see details of allotted quota and available alternatives in the Guidelines

Run Lab Sessions

  • Please arrive on time
  • Please note that booking time includes extra 30 minutes (15 at the start and 15 at

the end) to allow you to get ready for the experiment and remove any material after the experiment that you and the participants might have brought into the lab. If you need more than 30 minutes for preparation, please email the Lab Manager about this at the time of making a booking request.

  • Please go through the workplace health and safety related presentation (WHS

Presentation) with the participants at the start of the session. The presentation is copied to the desktop of all the labs' laptops.

Guidelines

Recruitment & management of participants

  • Recruitment and management of participants as well as payments to them are researcher’s responsibility

Number of participants per session

  • Please note that maximum number of participants per session for studies using BLab1 is 18 and BLab2 is

1

Lab access

  • Upon arrival, Lab Manager will issue the researcher a key to the lab. It is researcher’s responsibility to

return the key to the Lab Manger at the end of the session for the day

  • For every study session, time slots of 15 minutes each are spared before and after the session's actual
  • time. It is the responsibility of the researcher that he/she arrives at the lab early (maximum 15 minutes

before the session start time) to make the necessary preparation and leaves within 15 minutes after the session' completion so that lab can be used by other researchers. However if a researcher requires more time for set up and close out, an explicit request must be made at the time of making a booking request

SLIDE 11

11

Guidelines

In the lab

  • A profile on a Fileserver can be created on your behalf to store digital data. However, it is researcher’s

responsibility to remove the data at the completion of the study

  • No food or hot drinks are allowed in the labs, although water is fine
  • Researcher should inform the participants to be careful when drinking water
  • Remember to get the consent form approved by the Ethics Committee singed by the participants
  • In case of any problem with the software or hardware, please contact the Lab Manager. Also, if any

software or hardware are not working, please inform the Lab Manager about this so that it can be fixed immediately

  • Lab computers are not for personal use. The researcher using the lab should convey this to the

participants

  • The researcher must not leave the participants unattended
  • The lab must be locked if unattended
slide-12
SLIDE 12

12

Guidelines

After the session

  • It is researcher’s responsibility to remove all material brought into the lab by him/her or the participants

Licenses

  • It is the responsibility of the researcher that he/she follows all the licence related obligations of the used
  • software. For example, if Ztree experiment software is used, the researchers must cite the following

article in their paper: Urs Fischbacher (2007): z-Tree: Zurich Toolbox for Ready-made Economic Experiments, Experimental Economics 10(2), 171-178. E.g., write "The experiment was programmed and conducted with the software z-Tree (Fischbacher 2007)

Privacy policy

  • All paper-based data collected by the researcher (e.g., personally-identifying data, forms etc) is the

responsibility of the researcher conducting study and should be removed from the lab after each session

  • All data privacy and security rules of The Australian National University must be followed by the

researcher and no private data should be left in the lab

Enabling or disabling the Internet on client computers: You can control the client’s access to the internet from the server machine. Clients will maintain a “local” network connection so they will continue to be able to communicate with the server, but will not be able to access the internet. The server will maintain full internet access even when clients are disabled. To Enable the Internet (if disabled), double click “Internet Enabled” icon. To Disable, double click “Internet Disabled” icon available on the server computer’s desktop. If you have any questions or need help with the lab please contact Lab Manager at Amir.Riaz@anu.edu.au
