School meals during school closures

  • Though closed, schools and some community organizations will be serving meals

through the rest of the school year. This is statewide.

  • Free meals are available to all children ages 1 to 18 to pick up “grab and go” style.
  • To receive a school meal:

○ You do not have to attend that specific school or district to have receive a meal from that site ○ No application or income verification is needed. ○ Meals are available to students regardless of immigration status.

Check in with your school district or local organization on how they are serving meals:

  • The way that meals are delivered can vary by school district or organization, including:

○ Picking up a meal “grab and go” style directly from a meal site ○ Home delivery directly to a student’s home ○ Delivery by previous school bus route to a meal pick-up hub ○ Not requiring a child to be present if a parent or guardian is picking up the meal ○ Providing breakfast and lunch for multiple days at a time Please note that these methods for serving meals are not universal, it will vary by district or

○ Visit our map and search sites by zip code: summerfoodoregon.org/map ○ Text ‘FOOD’ or ‘COMIDA’ to 877-877 ○ Call your local school district or 211 ○ For Multnomah County: Please visit this map for both school meals and free groceries distributions at school sites. The list of school food access sites is also posted on the SUN Service System website. ○ To find information regarding a specific School District, check this comprehensive list of links to school meal plans during the closures.

Areas for Advocacy

Around School Meals If your school doesn’t currently some of the best practice ways to offer meals ( such as delivering meals by bus or directly to family’s home): Encourage them to do so! Community based solutions are needed here: volunteer or help develop a transportation/drop-off systems. Many School Districts are short-staffed.

At the federal level: Ways to strengthen SNAP in the next legislative COVID-19 response package:

  • Boosting SNAP maximum benefits by 15 percent
  • Increasing the minimum SNAP benefit from $16 to $30
  • Suspending all SNAP administrative rules that would terminate or weaken

At the federal level: Tell Congress to Deliver a COVID response bill that works for immigrant families, by:

  • Expand health care coverage for all regardless of immigration status
  • Ensure COVID-19 testing, treatment, and vaccines (when available) are

covered through emergency Medicaid.

requirement.

  • Halt implementation of the public charge rules.
