Student Engagement in Online Courses
Substantive Interaction in Distance Education
Criteria to Meet the Definition of “Substantive Interaction” Interactions must be initiated by the instructor
Most of these interactions should be done within Falcon Online (i.e. Assignments, Quizzes, Discussions, Gradebook)
Interactions must be “regular” and somewhat frequent
Minimum of once weekly
Interaction must be “substantive” – of an academic nature
More than "good job," provides substantive feedback
Meeting this benchmark of “regular and substantive interaction” in distance education directly impacts our ability to receive federal financial aid, per the U.S. Dept. of Education regulations.
Reporting Attendance in Online Classes
Federal regulations define attendance with an academically related activity
Must be a required academic assignment Student must engage in academic activity – can't just be logging in This is a national standard for every school with federal financial aid
Academically related activities include:
Submitting an academic assignment Taking an exam, interactive tutorial, computer assisted instruction Participating in online discussion about academic material
Attendance Reporting Training – Michelle Goldys Need help setting up your attendance academic activity?

programs, while assessing and supporting student
- nline readiness.
Online Faculty Readiness Support faculty with developing quality online programs and pedagogical considerations for distance learning, while growing the number of faculty who teach

programs/courses. Growing Online Infrastructure and Enrollment The number of students enrolled in online or hybrid classes exceeds face to face enrollment. Since 2013, the number of instructors teaching online has staying consistent, even though online sections are increasing. Goals: Meet demand for distance learning education at DSC.
