Student Engagement in Online Courses

Substantive Interaction in Distance Education

Criteria to Meet the Definition of “Substantive Interaction” – Interactions must be initiated by the instructor

– Most of these interactions should be done within Falcon Online (i.e. Assignments, Quizzes, Discussions, Gradebook)

– Interactions must be “regular” and somewhat frequent

– Minimum of once weekly

– Interaction must be “substantive” – of an academic nature

– More than "good job," provides substantive feedback

Meeting this benchmark of “regular and substantive interaction” in distance education directly impacts our ability to receive federal financial aid, per the U.S. Dept. of Education regulations.

Reporting Attendance in Online Classes

– Federal regulations define attendance with an academically related activity

– Must be a required academic assignment – Student must engage in academic activity – can't just be logging in – This is a national standard for every school with federal financial aid

– Academically related activities include:

– Submitting an academic assignment – Taking an exam, interactive tutorial, computer assisted instruction – Participating in online discussion about academic material

– Attendance Reporting Training – Michelle Goldys – Need help setting up your attendance academic activity?
