The title should be informative (What did you find?)

  • Most people will only read the title- so give some information that will add to

their knowledge

  • Avoid vague, uninformative, and boring titles like:

“Genetic characterization and mapping of the Rht-1 homoeologs and flanking sequences in wheat”

  • Useful titles should communicate the main finding:

“The Ph1 Locus Suppresses Cdk2-Type Activity during Premeiosis and Meiosis in Wheat” “A NAC Gene Regulating Senescence Improves Grain Protein, Zinc, and Iron Content in Wheat” “The high grain protein content gene Gpc-B1 accelerates senescence and has pleiotropic effects on protein content in wheat”

The title should be informative (What did you find?)

“The Ph1 Locus Suppresses Cdk2-Type Activity during Premeiosis and Meiosis in Wheat” The role of Ph1 during Premeiosis and Meiosis in Wheat “A NAC Gene Regulating Senescence Improves Grain Protein, Zinc, and Iron Content in Wheat” Positional cloning and functional characterisation of the Gpc-B1 gene. “The high grain protein content gene Gpc-B1 accelerates senescence and has pleiotropic effects on protein content in wheat” Gpc-B1 affects senescence and protein content in wheat “Wheat Vacuolar Iron Transporter TaVIT2 transports Fe and Mn and is effective for

  • biofortification. ”

Characterisation of VIT2 vacuolar transporter in wheat “Genome-wide sequence and expression analysis of the NAC transcription factor family in polyploid wheat” (sometimes more descriptive) “Haplotype analysis of the pre-harvest sprouting resistance locus Phs-A1 reveals a causal role of TaMKK3-A in global germplasm” (sometimes more specialised)

Practice makes perfect

  • Rehearse talk (and record it). Don’t improvise
  • Practice (don’t memorize) how you are going to speak
  • Read out loud and in front of a mirror
slide-43
SLIDE 43

Before you arrive

  • Be prepared (several USB drives, Dropbox, email presentation)
  • Know your audience (who are you speaking to)
  • Triple check for spelling
slide-44
SLIDE 44

During your presentation

  • Get to know the room
  • Maintain eye contact across audience
  • Speak up (everyone has to hear you) and change tone
  • Pronunciation and pauses
  • Don’t hide behind the computer
  • Careful with jokes
  • Do not read from the screen unless showing or describing a photo/

graph

Quick tips on posters

  • Keep it simple and short: lots of images, little text
  • It’s a presentation: be prepared for 30 sec - 2 min - 10 min
  • No need to include an abstract (it’s a poster!)
