  1. One Multidisciplinary Approach to IT Education J. Michael Dunn, Dean http://informatics.indiana.edu

  2. What is I nf ormatics? I nf ormat ics is t he int egrat ion of t he art , science, and t he human dimensions of inf ormat ion t echnology t o provide solut ions t o discipline-specif ic problems I nf ormat ics is a response t o t he dat a/ inf ormat ion/ knowledge gaps caused by “billions and billions of bit s”

  3. The Central Goal of I nf ormatics data inf ormation knowledge

  4. I nf ormatics is “the bridge” between I T and application areas, e. g. Bioinf ormat ics Chemical inf ormat ics Healt h inf ormat ics

  5. Example: Bioinf ormatics Pr oviding unpr ecedent ed access t o biological dat a Managing biological dat abanks wit h numer ous cont r ibut or s and user s Ext r act ing usef ul inf or mat ion f r om lar ge and dense biological dat a Assembling molecular pieces int o pr edict ive models of biological syst ems f or in silico exper iment s

  6. Challenge and Opportunity 1985 2000 1 experiment 1 experiment 1 gene 10,000 genes 10 dat a 10,000,000 dat a

  7. Why is inf ormatics important? bits INFORMATION GAP 1984 1986 1988 1990 1992 1994 1996 1998 2000 data load information capacity

  8. From Peter Denning’s Communications of the ACM column (June, 2001) on “The I T Prof ession”: An important movement is taking place on campuses. This is the movement to organize I T schools. I t is a welcome development in the movement to f orm an I T prof ession. This movement is gaining a momentum that overcomes the territoriality of traditional academic departments. We are at last beginning to address the challenging problem of designing an education f or an I T prof essional that is not constrained by the idiosyncrasies of any particular specialty, most notably computer science. …

  9. Peter Denning (cont.) [One] model is exemplif ied by the new School of I nf ormatics at I ndiana University. Their novel academic structure is likely to appeal to a great number of universities. Rather than operate as a completely self - contained unit, they have a small core f aculty and they partner with the participating f aculty of other schools. Each participating unit of f ers a specialization track f or students who have completed the core.

  10. Identity Statement •I ndiana Universit y’s School of I nf ormat ics of f ers an academic pat h f or st udent s f rom diverse backgrounds who are seeking a rewarding inf ormat ion t echnology career which combines wit h anot her area of st udy, t hus opening varied career opport unit ies. The curriculum emphasizes bot h t he t echnical and human aspect s of problem solving, and t eaches innovat ion, t eamwork, and opt imism. •The School underst ands t he role of mult idisciplinary research in building a world-class f acult y and in recruit ing and educat ing out st anding st udent s, but also places a primacy on creat ing new knowledge/ t echnologies / uses f or t he benef it of humankind. •The School is commit t ed t o collaborat ion wit h indust ry and government in order t o hold up it s side of t he “t hree legged st ool” t hat support s economic growt h and progress.
