According to ancient Greek myth, Zeus announced a competition in which the gods were asked to invent a beneficial gift for the people. The winning god would receive a city in his or her namesake. Athena, the goddess of wisdom, and Poseidon, the god of the sea, competed against one another. Poseidon struck his trident and out of the rocks a miraculous horse was born - whoever sat on it would win in any battle.
