  1. NUTRITION SITUATION UPDATE

  2. DATA SOURCES Recent (May-August) SMART Surveys – 22 Previous Surveys/Historical Survey Trends Rapid MUAC assessments RRM MUAC data FSMS – 1 st first time to include anthropometry measurement Programme data – Screening data HMIS

  3. METHODOLOGY Most partners on the NIWG represented Analysis was done on a county by county basis, overall nutrition situation analysis also fed into the IPC Food security Analysis. Based on the data source different level of reliability was given for the overall classification:- Recent Validated SMART Surveys– Highest Reliability FSMS/ RRM and program data – medium Reliability FSMS- State Level estimate where there was no other data available- Lowest Reliability WHO classification of malnutrition used to classify the overall nutrition situation in the counties Source of Data and Level of Reliability are both illustrated in the classification map:- Where data was from the FSMS and RRM lines or grey dot was used on top of the colour to denote the data source and likely scenario. Solid colour was used where validated SMART surveys were available

  4. SUMMARY OF NUTRITION SITUATION The conflict affected states show the highest burden of malnutrition (GAM >15%) ; Upper Nile, Unity, Jonglei as well the traditionally high burden states Northern Bahr Ghazal and Warrap The highest acute malnutrition rates are recorded in Leer (31%), Panyijar (30%) and Akobo (31%) counties- Very Critical rates. Acute Malnutrition rates in Lakes and Central Equatoria are at Serious levels (GAM: 10-14.9%) Acute Malnutrition rates in Eastern Equatoria are at Alert Levels Calculated caseloads based on the most recent information (Sept 2014) do not show any significant difference from what was calculated in May 2014.

  5. CONCLUSION Apart from food security other factors - morbidity, dietary and feeding habits as well as poor/constrained service delivery in some parts of the country due to limited humanitarian access are contributing to the high malnutrition rate The malnutrition rates are likely to remain above emergency thresholds (GAM >15%) in most parts of country especially in the conflict affected states despite the anticipated food security improvements between now and December. Availability of nutrition information still remains a challenge, although there is marked improvement from April 2014 Concerted efforts are required by all stakeholders to fund, incorporate, and conduct nutrition surveillance and monitoring as an integral part of programme activities. FSMS data quality and methodology need to be improved and this will require concerted effort from the nutrition cluster There is need to focus of preventative measures to prevent malnutrition- this will require a multi-sectoral approach

  6. WAY FORWARD Need for more representative data esp in Unity, Upper Nile & Jongeli and in nutritionally vulnerable states Warrap, NBeGZ and Lakes Caseloads – No need to revise the caseload targets Review of survey timing Development of 2015 Survey Plan FSMS – Further improve methodology and quality Review Nutrition Map in December after the ‘post harvest surveys’ , Oct FSMS, recent rapid assessments and programme data

  7. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS TO THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH (NUTRITION) AND ALL PARTNERS FROM THE NIWG FOR THE OVERALL ANALYSIS AND TO ALL NUTRITION PARTNERS WHO CONTRIBUTED TO THE DATA COLLECTION/ANALYSIS PROCESS
