I have had recent conversations with people where I have encouraged them to "proof check" their work carefully. We are seeing many typos and missed words in their work. This is preventing them from achieving DTC and is also frustrating clients. I am reassured again and again that they are proofreading their work, and I have no doubt that they are proofreading, but it is ineffective.
This has had me thinking that about how to clarify and educate
and why one of these methods is good for reading a book at bedtime, while the other is necessary for your MT/HDS work. We must remember that "one little letter" or "one little word" can have an enormous impact on someone's life. Here are some examples that I have seen recently. I show these not to embarrass anyone, because we have all done it, but to highlight the importance of what I mean and how important it is to be accurate.
S/b: "Her mum works as a public servant" "Histology shows signs of cancer" S/b: "Histology shows no signs of cancer" "Her would has been cleaned and redressed" S/b: "Her wound has been cleaned and redressed" "She has casanova of the cervix" S/b: "She has carcinoma of the cervix" (Please think about your work as you type!)

PROOF CHECKING This is retraining your brain to slow down and look at every single word, one at a time as you read and understanding the context of what your report means. Over time, you can speed this process up.
PROOFREADING This is allowing your eyes to flow over a full word or sentence. Here is why this method does not work when trying to produce a quality file. "Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteers be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe." You can read the words because the human mind reads words as a whole, and not letter- by-letter.
