  1. Novel Coronavirus Use of WHO code for emergency use Coding meeting February 2020

  2. Background Novel coronavirus (2019- nCoV) is a new (or ‘novel’) strain of coronavirus not previously identified in humans before the outbreak in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV).

  3. Common signs of 2019-nCoV infection include respiratory symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath, breathing difficulties and fever. In severe cases, the infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and death.

  4. Coding Rule This advice is effective from 1 January 2020. Where there is documentation of acute respiratory disease due to 2019-nCoV,(now called COVID 19) assign as an additional code: U07.1 Emergency use of U07.1 For example, where documentation states pneumonia due to 2019-nCoV, assign: J12.8 Other viral pneumonia B97.2 Coranavirus as the cause of diseases classified to other chapters and U07.1 Emergency use of U07.1 •

  5. The World Health Organization (WHO) has advised that U07.1 Emergency use of U07.1 is assigned for confirmed diagnosis of 2019-nCov acute respiratory disease. Please note that WHO has also advised that the name ‘2019 - nCoV’ is temporary and is likely to change (independent of date and virus family, and for consistency with international virus taxonomy). Update: As of this week (12 th Feb 2020) The virus has now been named : COVID 19

  6. Note: DO NOT assign U07.1 to episodes where novel coronavirus ( COVID 19) is only suspected . For suspected cases, please see ACS 0012 Suspected conditions for guidance

  7. Suspected cases Code the acute respiratory condition as per the guidelines in ACS 0001 Principal Diagnosis and ACS 0002 Additional diagnoses Do Not use the U07.1 Emergency use code. If the patient is transferred assign Z756 “transferred with suspected condition”.
