Executive Summary of the ISBE Guidance - Academic Considerations

  • If the school is able to comply with capacity limits and implement social distancing, ISBE is strongly

recommending a return to in-person instruction.

  • A return to in-person instruction does not signify a return to pre-pandemic operations.
  • 5 clock hours of instruction are required

○ Direct live instruction ○ Recorded instruction ○ Independent work

  • Appropriate staff planning and collaboration time (team & vertical articulation)
  • Consider professional development needs
  • “A high priority should be placed on providing in-person instruction for students who have

Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), 504 Plans, and/or who receive English Language supports. These students should be in attendance in-person daily,” (ISBE, 2020, p.15).

Community Survey

If we hold face-to-face instruction in the fall and your child has to follow Phase 4 guidelines, will you send your child to school?

slide-6
SLIDE 6

Elementary Schools

  • A typical classroom can safely fit 18-20 students with social distancing.
  • To limit transitions and keep students seated in one space throughout the day, we will

require teachers to switch classrooms and explore the implementation of self-contained classrooms in some grade levels.

  • Student arrival times will be delayed 45 minutes to allow for staff collaboration and

planning time. Student dismissal times will not be delayed.

  • With these adjustments, all students can safely attend in-person instruction daily.

○ Preschool guidance was released on July 21. Additional time is needed to discuss the new guidance.

SLIDE 7

Elementary Students - A Day in the Life (In-Person)

Students enter the building and walk directly to their homeroom class. Students will receive all instruction in this room (ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies, Specials).

Each teacher will have a scheduled time during the day for recess. Students will go outside, remain six feet apart, and remove their masks (weather permitting).

Most students will eat lunch in the classroom. To increase social distancing measures, some students may travel to the lunchroom at this time.

slide-8
SLIDE 8

Middle School

  • A typical Conrady classroom can safely fit 16 -18 students with social distancing.
  • Due to scheduling and teacher certification constraints, students are unable to remain in
  • ne seat throughout the day.
  • Because of these factors, we are unable to safely maintain social distancing guidelines if

all students attended class on a daily basis. Therefore, we are recommending that the majority of our students participate in ½ day of in-person instruction and ½ day of remote instruction. ○ AM students will attend from 7:50 until 10:30 ○ PM students will attend from 11:35 until 2:15

Remote Learning Option

  • To accommodate students that are unable to attend in-person instruction, we will be offering a remote learning
  • ption for families.
  • Students have access to an online platform that will be used to deliver instruction. A Chromebook will be

provided for students to use at home.

  • The following ISBE requirements must be met:

○ Students are engaged in 5 clock hours of instruction; ○ Teachers are implementing traditional grading policies; and ○ Teachers are utilizing formal attendance procedures.

  • We are exploring how teachers will use Google Meet to livestream classroom instruction. This will allow remote

students to participate in synchronous learning.

SLIDE 32

Classroom Guidelines

District 117 will be implementing the following classroom guidelines:

  • Provide assigned seating for students;
  • Require students to remain in their assigned seats to

the greatest extent possible;

  • Remove unnecessary furniture from the classroom;
  • Rearrange desks to maximize the space between

students;

  • Turn desks to face in the same direction; and
  • Provide direct instruction and frequent reminders on

proper use of PPE and appropriate hygiene.

slide-33
SLIDE 33

Shared Materials & Personal Items

The CDC recommends that electronic devices, toys, books and other games or learning aids not be shared.

  • To the greatest extent possible, each student will use his/her own supplies and materials in order

to minimize sharing.

  • Locker use in the hallway and PE locker rooms will be suspended.
  • Students’ personal items should be stored in a separate bag or bin to ensure they remain

separate from the belongings of other students.

  • Conrady students should use a backpack to travel with their personal items. Elementary

students can store their personal items in their desk or in a bin located near their desk.

slide-34
SLIDE 34

Attendance and Absences

  • Daily attendance and engagement of students should be expected whether students are

participating in classes in-person or remotely.

  • Student attendance will need to be recorded throughout the day in order to accurately account

for remote learners.

  • Attendance will be taken simultaneously for students that are present in the classroom and

students that are present virtually.

  • Practices or rewards that encourage perfect attendance or would discourage individuals from

staying at home when they are ill will be prohibited.

slide-35
SLIDE 35

Assessing and Addressing Learning Loss

iReady Diagnostic Assessment District Assessments (Formative and Summative) District 117 will be assessing and addressing learning loss through the use of two types of assessment.

slide-36
SLIDE 36

Grading Practices

  • ISBE recommends school districts return to traditional grading policies and make modifications

as necessary. Additionally, ISBE strongly recommends that any return to traditional grading policies ensures that students have all of the necessary tools, including: – Technology – Teacher supports at school and at home to complete all assignments, take assessments and complete projects in a timely manner.

  • In North Palos, traditional grading practices will be implemented. Elementary students will

receive standards-based grades, while Conrady students will receive letter grades.

slide-37
SLIDE 37

Physical Education

  • Students are required to wear mask during indoor physical education classes.
  • At this time, we are envisioning that physical education courses will consist of the following:

– Health lessons – Outdoor exercise (weather-permitting) – Lessons on social and emotional well-being

slide-38
SLIDE 38

Technology

  • All students (in-person & remote) in Kindergarten - 8th grade will have a Chromebook assigned to

them for daily use.

  • All students in 3rd - 8th grade will take their Chromebooks back and forth to school on a daily

basis to support learning.

  • Students will use a consistent platform for digital learning management.
  • In-person learning will rely heavily on digital learning in order to provide consistency and flexibility

if learning needs to become remote at any time.

  • Instructional technology resources and training will be a priority in order to provide teachers and

students with the most appropriate instructional practices due to the current learning environment.

slide-39
SLIDE 39

Technology

  • The Remote Learning option would require students to take part in daily instruction through

video conferencing with Google Meet.

  • Student cameras and microphones will need to be enabled in order to properly monitor and

interact with remote students.

  • Internet access will be necessary in order to participate in remote instruction.
slide-40
SLIDE 40

Social Emotional Learning

STUDENTS

  • Educate students on where and how to seek support and guidance
  • Tier I social workers to lead the charge of developing out SEL groups/opportunities for Remote Learners
  • Provide guidance for all students through all-school campaigns; infused with work of PBIS teams
  • Seize the moment to seek a partnership with physical education teachers to integrate SEL lessons due to

the impact of limitations on their curriculum implementation STAFF

  • Messaging to acknowledge and be respectful of individual concerns regarding the pandemic unique to

each employee

  • Provide resources for mindfulness and coping strategies for stress
  • Develop district-wide nutrition and exercise challenge for staff participation
  • Utilization of an SEL toolbox for educating staff on quality SEL programming
  • Fusing together the normal phase of SEL growth with immediate response to COVID-19
slide-41
SLIDE 41

Special Education & Related Services

  • As per the Illinois State Board of Education, students with IEPs must be given high priority for in-person
  • instruction. ISBE has outlined planning considerations for prioritizing in person instruction for students receiving

special education services. The guidelines as well as the student’s unique circumstances will be used when making individual determinations.

  • Since Conrady students are attending half day , students receiving special education services that attend

Conrady may be considered for full day attendance depending on decisions made by the IEP team and the review of planning considerations outlined by ISBE.

  • For students who receive special education services and are participating in the Remote Learning option, IEP

teams will work collaboratively with families to create a Remote Learning Service Plan.

  • Related services will be delivered either in person or through google meet live video conference depending on

whether the student is attending in person or remotely.
