Goals for 2020-21 • Ensure safety and security for each of our scholars and educators • Provide maximum flexibility to families to ensure they feel supported and student needs are met • Provide the best education possible for each of our 730 students, acknowledging the myriad of different needs and also the differences related to age and maturation • Continue to grow/develop relationships as we work together in a school community

Victories and Challenges-COVID-19 Victories Challenges • Teachers, students and families • Not all students engaged or quickly responded were able to engage • 100% of district technology • Educators have varying levels of dispatched to students for home expertise and provided varying use levels of support • Improved relationships in many cases due to personalization • Families struggled to juggle personal needs, work needs, • Developed ways to deliver food, supervision needs, educational materials to the doorstep of needs students • Distance learning just doesn’t • Flexibility for all stakeholders work well for many students

Educational Program Options for District Consideration • Continuous Learning 2.0 (Online learning plus opportunities for asynchronous learning experiences) • Split or Rotating Schedules (with continuous remote learning) • Two-day rotation, A/B rotation, or two-week rotation • Phased-in Opening (with remote learning by grade level) • School would be open for some groups of students such as PK-3 and other grades would access remote learning. Grades 4-6 would be phased in when physical distancing restrictions are lifted. • Face to Face Instruction for All Students

North Beach Plan as of 7.1.2020 • Pre-K through 5 th Grade: Daily, full-day instruction for all students in grades Pre-K through 5 th Grade • Alternating, A/B schedule for students in grades 6-12, with daily online/at home learning expectations for all students in all courses • Some students in 6-12 may be required to attend daily to meet individualized educational needs

  7. What will this look like? Goal: Predictable daily/weekly schedule that parents can count on that delivers high quality instruction to each student. August 1-10: Parents will be able to indicate their preference for 20-21, Semester 1, for “in school” instruction or 100% remote learning. Pre-K-5 th Grade: Students will be in school all day, each day. All building staff will partner to ensure social distancing/safety guidelines are practiced. Grades 6-12: Each school day in Semester 1 will be color coded yellow or black, alternating. Students will be assigned and expected to attend on either yellow or black days.

What if I just don’t feel comfortable sending my scholar to their school building? • Your student can still experience the daily lessons taught inside the classroom in other ways. • Student/parent partners with school staff to complete grade level/content packets to learn and demonstrate mastery • Zoom into Live Classroom Lessons • Access from home, virtual blended learning (much in the same way as we supported students, Spring 2020) • Watch Recorded Classroom Lessons • For learners who might not be available at each of the scheduled lessons offered throughout the school day, the lessons may be recorded for viewing at a later time.

  9. What will exclude my scholar from school? (Washington DOH Requirement) • A cough • Congestions/running nose – not related to season allergies • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing • Unusual fatigue • A fever of 100.4 degrees or • Diarrhea higher or a sense of having a • Anyone in household with any fever symptoms? • A sore throat • Student has been in close • Chills contact with anyone suspected or confirmed COVID-19? • New loss of taste or smell • Student had any medication to • Muscle or body aches reduce a fever before coming to school? • Nausea/vomiting

  10. Getting to School • Parents will be encouraged to transport their own children when possible (parents will be asked to remain in vehicles and not congregate in gathering areas) • Students who can safely bike/walk to school will be encouraged to do so • ALL NBSD bus transportation will operate • All riders/drivers will be required to wear a cloth mask while riding • Family members will be asked to sit together • Bus windows will be down, slightly, increasing fresh air flow • Bus cleaning after each am/pm run

  11. Health Screening at Home and School • All staff and students will sign/bring a health attestation from home verifying screening or be screened at entry each day • If no parent attestation is received, staff will screen students with a temperature check and questionnaire asking if they are experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms prior to entering the school

Face coverings for ALL students (DOH Requirement) • Students • Cloth face coverings should not be worn by: • Cloth face covering that covers the nose and mouth, • Those with a disability that preferred; prevents them from comfortably wearing or removing a face covering AND/OR • Those with certain respiratory conditions or trouble • Face shields may be an breathing alternative to a cloth face • Those who are deaf or hard of covering hearing and use facial and mouth movements as a part of communication • Those advised by a medical, legal or behavioral health professional that wearing a face covering my pose a risk to that person

  15. Face Coverings for Staff (DOH Requirement) • Cloth face covering that covers the nose and mouth • Face shields may be an alternative to a cloth face covering during instruction only • Cloth face coverings must be worn in the hallways, playground, lunchroom monitoring, etc.

  16. Classrooms • School staff will work to ensure social distancing • Students access to “shared” materials will be limited • Hand washing and sanitization will be a regular part of our routine • Drinking “fountains” will not be accessible - Water bottle filling stations encouraged and water bottles provided

  17. Breakfast and Lunch • Varied meal times • Different meal locations (lunch room, classroom, alternative location) • Eat with common cohort (1 st grade with 1 st grade)

  18. Elementary Recess • Classrooms may have own toys to take out to recess • Limited number of groups at recess • Designated play areas for cohorts of students • 6’ social distancing • No sharing of toys • Playground equipment will be open, except when raining (same as previous years) • Frequently touched surfaces will be cleaned often • Wear face coverings • Use of playground and/or gym will be spaces for recess

Special Education Supports/Services • Services occur in regular classroom, if feasible • Focus on addressing learning needs through acceleration vs. remediation • Staff assisting students with higher needs may need to wear additional PPE as 6’ social distancing measures may not be possible or consistent throughout the day to meet student needs • Services will be determined on a student by student basis in accordance to their Individual Education Program (IEP)

  20. What happens if a student/staff show COVID-19 symptoms at school • Separate the person away from others in triage area • Supervision at a distance of at least 6’, until the sick person can leave • Sick person should wear a cloth face covering or mask if tolerated • Staff will wear additional personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gown, face covering, face shield and gloves • Air out and then clean and disinfect the areas where the person was after they leave • Parent will inform school right away if person is diagnosed with COVID-19 • If a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19, the local DOH will advise • It is likely that many of the student’s classmates will be considered close contacts and need to be quarantined for 14 days • So it is very important that sick people do not come to school!

  21. When Can My Student Return to School After Having Suspected Signs of COVID-19? (DOH) • At least 3 days (72 hours) have passed since recovery – defined as no fever without the use of medications and improvement in respiratory signs like cough and shortness of breath; AND • At least 10 days have passed since the signs first showed up. ________________________________________________________________ OR • It has been at least 3 days (72 hours) since recovery AND a health care provider has certified that the student does not have suspected or confirmed COVID-19
