BREAD OF HEAVEN BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND • Established in January 2001 • Bread of Heaven was initiated by Pastor Reggie John & Ivan Naidoo and was taken as a Community & Social Responsibility project and was presented to the Inter-Church Fellowship with tremendous support. • Hunger Relief Programme – a ministry of Kairos Ministries, administered by Gate Ministries, Port Shepstone. Now running for the 17 th year. • Programme was initially launched at the Louisiana Primary School as a small feeding scheme for hungry and needy school children without state funding. 4

WHAT IS BREAD OF HEAVEN and WHAT DOES IT DO? • Non-profit, Non-governmental, Community Organisation and School Feeding Scheme administered by the Church. • Operates within the Port Shepstone area – Hibiscus Coast and Ugu District • Target Group : Needy, Indigent , Poor children of local Primary and High Schools in the Age group 4 to 18 years. • Main Beneficiary :90 % - Black African children • Provides hungry and needy school children with much needed sandwiches on a DAILY basis (Monday to Friday) – FOR ALL SCHOOL DAYS IN THE YEAR. • All needy children irrespective of race, colour, creed, language, religion, political affiliation, etc are provided with meals. 5

MAIN IN AIM M AND OBJECT ECTIVE IVE: RELIEV IEVIN ING G POVER VERTY TY AND HUNG NGER ER AMONG ONG SCHOO HOOL CHIL ILDRE DREN WHY Y BREAD AD OF HEAVE AVEN N CHOSE OSE CHILDREN LDREN AS PART T OF ITS S POVERT ERTY Y RELIEF IEF PROGRAMME OGRAMME ? • Formative years of the child are considered to be the most important for physical and mental development – nutrition is therefore vital. • Schools Surveyed - indicate an urgent need for nutrition as hundreds of kids turned up at school without breakfast let alone lunch. • Many local school schools were NOT on the government’s school nutrition programme and needed to be assisted – Bread of Heaven obliged. • Without proper nutrition- the children will be condemned to a lifetime of impaired physical and mental development. • “Feed a child – Nourish a Nation” 6

GROWTH OF BREAD OF HEAVEN • January 2001 – Louisiana Primary School was the first school to benefit • Demand for assistance from other needy schools has grown substantially since 2001 • 2004 - 800 children benefited daily from the Bread of Heaven • 2004 : Monthly operating costs was R 15 000 p / m • 2001 – 2004: a total of 600 000 sandwiches were supplied to needy/indigent children • 2007 - 920 sandwiches provided per day – approx. 200 000 sandwiches supplied for the year. • 2008 – 1080 sandwiches are made daily from Monday to Friday • 2001 – 2008 : a total of more than a million sandwiches were supplied to needy/indigent children – indicating a phenomenal demand. • 2018 - Monthly operating cost – approx. R 45 000 p/m 7

  9. SOURCES OF FUNDING FOR BREAD OF HEAVEN • Relies heavily on Public Donations • Donations from Churches and Schools • Grant in Aid - local municipality • Sponsorships from Business/Private Sector • Special Fund Raising Events – Annual Bread of Heaven Fun Run 9

CHALLENGES – FACED BY BREAD OF HEAVEN • Substantial increase in DEMAND for assistance from Bread of Heaven for indigent school children. • Schools which are currently beneficiaries from Bread of Heaven have increased their numbers substantially. • Enormous escalation in costs of bread, butter, jam, peanut butter and other fillings as well as increased operational costs. • Expenses since 2001 have increased from R 3000 per month to R 45 000 per month currently. Annual Operating Costs for 2019 – projected to be R 500 000. • Demand is presently exceeding supply. • Need to supply a larger lunch package. • Need for more volunteers and possibility of full-time personnel to administer and sustain the growing programme 10

WHY SUPPORT BREAD OF HEAVEN ? • Bread of Heaven is a NGO and a registered Non-Profit Organisation (with a NPO number: 930018496 ) • Any donations / sponsorships are TAX DEDUCTIBLE as all monies go towards a worthy cause. • Bread of Heaven has only 1 salaried employee who is given a basic allowance and the rest of the staff are VOLUNTEERS from the community who assist with the making of sandwiches and distribution to schools on a daily basis from Monday to Friday (approximately 200 school days per year) • 95 % of the all sponsorship/donations/funds generated go towards provision of sandwiches and there are NO hidden admin costs. • Financial statements are audited and made available. • Bread of Heaven is a HIGHLY CREDIBLE ORGANISATION operating within the principles of honesty, integrity and social responsibility. 11

HOW COULD YOU ASSIST BREAD OF HEAVEN ? • Making a monthly voluntary monetary contribution via debit /stop order • Making a voluntary one off donation/sponsorship as an individual/owner or through your business. • Sponsorship or donation of the sandwiches for a particular month or day. • Networking with other Businesses or individuals to assist as part of their social responsibility eg. getting people/ co-operatives / businesses with whom you deal with to assist Bread of Heaven. • Businesses could adopt a school/s. • Adopting the Bread of Heaven as your Beneficiary/ Charitable Organisation for the financial year. • Consider developing a partnership with Bread of Heaven. 12
