  1. NHSS Community Outreach Mission Native Hawaiian Student Services - Outreach mission is to make all students (K-12, transfer and non- traditional students) feel like the can reach higher education, alter and push back the narrative of Native Hawaiian displacement in higher education, expose our students to other Native Hawaiian faculty/staff, programs and resources on campus and in the community while transforming UH M ā noa to being a “Hawaiian Place of Learning” and a culturally rich place for all faculty, staff, students and community through a Hawaiian lens. “Problem Statement” In 1986, a University of Hawai ʻ i Hawaiian Studies Task Force completed the Ka ʻū Report, which identified problems and recommended solutions to address Native Hawaiian education. One of those issues was the under-representation of Native Hawaiian students. Below are more identified problems: • Native Hawaiians do not feel or perceive college as accessible, affordable. • Certain high schools have more resources and preparation for college (disparity of college prep resources in Hawai ʻ i high school.) • Not enough strong pipelines from K-12 that direct students into high education. • Feeling not worthy what it takes to get into college and continue in college. • No clear “pathway” students take when attending college (full time job, take care of family, etc.)
