Outcomes from inspection Sept 09 – May 12 Seven key features of

  • utstanding provision of E&D
  • 1. Equality has strategic prominence

and is integral to self assessment and quality improvement

  • 2. Values are clearly articulated, well

understood and owned by all

  • 3. There is clear and decisive evaluation

and monitoring of performance and

  • utcomes of the different

‘groups’ of learners with appropriate action

Seven key features of

  • utstanding provision of E&D

4 Bullying, intimidatory behaviour and prejudiced comments are routinely challenged by all staff 5 There is frequent and effective staff training resulting in good understanding of what equality and diversity means to job role and responsibility at all levels

Seven key features of outstanding provision of E&D

6 Equality and diversity is successfully embedded in teaching, training and learning, in respect of content and in planning to meet individual needs (classroom practice and in the place of employment) 7 Employers are actively engaged in understanding and promoting the benefits of equality and understanding diversity.

Looking back - 5 minutes to Pair and Share…one success?

Seven key features of outstanding provision E&D ① ① ① ①Equality central to self assessment / Quality improvement ② ② ② ②Values well understood, owned by all ③ ③ ③ ③‘Narrowing the gap’ between different groups ④ ④ ④ ④Bullying, inappropriate comments routinely challenged ⑤ ⑤ ⑤ ⑤E&D training regular, tailored to job role and responsibility, evaluated for impact ⑥ ⑥ ⑥ ⑥E&D embedded in curriculum ⑦ ⑦ ⑦ ⑦Employers actively engaged in promoting benefits

How Colleges Improve; a review of effective practice; what makes an impact and why. Ofsted Sept 2012 All the outstanding and improving colleges visited were judged at inspection to be good in terms of promoting equality and diversity effectively. In the best examples, the promotion of equality and diversity was, like self-assessment, integral to

  • planning. It was seen in terms of narrowing the gap for learners

through good teaching and learning, matched to learners’ different needs; in promoting social inclusion; and in the appreciation of cultural diversity within the curriculum, and inside and outside the college. The inspection judgements for equality and diversity, teaching and learning, and outcomes for learners suggest there is a strong relationship between these three aspects; in other words, learners are more likely to succeed when their individual needs are properly met and when they feel included. Common features of colleges underperforming – the promotion

  • f equality and diversity was not a priority

Looking forward - Ofsted Inspection 2012

2012 inspection framework Eight strategic themes, (and paragraph examples in framework):

  • 1. Equality performance data
  • 2. Learners understand values, roles

and responsibilities

  • 3. Equality fully partnered with quality
  • 4. Training
  • 5. E&D fully integrated in the curriculum
  • 6. Strategic action plan to drive forward

and genuinely advance E&D

  • 7. Discrimination, prejudice, harassment

eliminated

  • 8. E&D fully integrated into work-based

learning programmes 146,147,175 145,148,149, 162,165,174 172,173,175 175,176 153,154,156, 160,164,165, 173,176 164,175,176 153,154,156, 160,164,165, 175,176

Strategic theme 1; Equality performance data

  • Data challenges – reliability, lack of

data on some areas, ease of access

  • Getting the data generally not an
  • issue. It’s often more about:

– Ownership – Analysis – Action for improvement – Evaluating impact of action

Strategic theme 1; Equality performance data

  • Take a ‘gap busting’ approach
  • Mind the gaps (systematic

assessment and tracking)

  • Know the gaps

(good data analysis)

  • Narrow the gaps (consider

effective pedagogy, focus on the individual (target setting, motivating and mentoring, raising aspirations and ambitions)

  • Celebrate gap busting

(acknowledge and build on success)

A common equality gap:

  • Some curriculum areas have equality

recruitment gaps, for example females in engineering, males in hair and beauty, learners from bme backgrounds

  • n apprenticeship

programmes

  • What success stories can we share on

how we have narrowed learner equality recruitment gaps? What critical success factors are in common?

Conclusions – three key messages

  • 1. E&D continues to feature

highly in the 2012 framework

  • 2. Equality and Quality go

hand in hand….this isn’t just about your journey towards equality...

  • 3. There is a bigger picture

here….
