  3. Definitions Denotation: Denotation refers to the use of the dictionary definition or literal meaning of a word. Connotation: Connotations are the associations people make with words that go being the literal or dictionary definition. Many words have connotations that create emotions or feelings. Climax: the turning point of the action in the plot of a play or story. The climax represents the point of greatest tension in the work Falling actions: is the action that typically follows the climax and reveal its results. Style: is the distinctive way in which an author uses language. Word choice, phrasing, sentence length, tone dialogue, purpose, and attitude toward audience and subject can all contribute and authors writing style. Rising Action: is the part of the plot that begins to occur as soon as the conflict is introduced, adds complications to the conflict and increases reader interest. Oxymoron: putting two contradictory words together.

  4. Examples Denotation: They built a house. In the above sentence, house is meant literally as in a building where a family lives. If the word "home" was used instead in the above sentence in place of "house", the meaning would not be so literal as there are many emotions associated with the word "home" beyond simply the structure where people live. Connotation: And once again, the autumn leaves were falling. This phrase uses ‘autumn’ to signify something coming to an end. Rising action: For example the rising action in The Three Little Pigs takes place as the pigs set out on their own and begin to make their own decisions. Climax: The soldiers, clutching their weapons, raced across the beaches, then scaled the cliffs, and met the enemy, face to face. Oxymoron: bittersweet, jumbo shrimp, and act naturally. Style: The pleasures of the imagination, taken in their full extent, are not so gross as those of sense.
