Net zero emissions by 2050 is essential to meeting the objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement to limit the increase in global temperature to below 2°C by the end of the century. IPCC Special Report (2018) has said global warming is likely to reach 1.5 °C between 2030 and 2052 if it continues to rise at the current rate.

  • Carbon emissions reduced

compared to a baseline

  • Emissions reduction

projects e.g. renewables, energy efficiency, sustainable transport projects.

  • The first step towards

achieving a net zero emissions target.

  • Reduce net carbon dioxide

emissions to zero by also balancing or offsetting them.

  • Often applies to organisations,

buildings or specific products. (a certification)

KEY TERMS

  • Reducing emissions as much

as possible and offsetting the rest.

  • This includes all the 6 main

greenhouse gas emissions (CO2, N20, CH4, SF6, HFCs, PFCs) - not just carbon dioxide.

  • Across all sectors in the

economy and at all scales – international, national, state, local, business, individual.

  • Set targets for carbon leadership
  • Develop a net zero pathway for councils
  • Develop action plans for achieving net zero targets
  • Identify and address scope three emissions (waste, procurement, consumption)
  • Fleet and transport transition strategies
  • Climate change risk assessments and adaptation plans

Solar agreement delivers significant benefits to Bland Shire A rooftop Solar Power Purchase Agreement with DPIE’s prequalified supplier has allowed access to cheaper electricity which is set to deliver significant long term financial savings to Bland Shire Council. ▪ Bland Shire was one of the first Councils in NSW to enter into a power purchase agreement for rooftop solar - making the Bland Shire a regional leader in its approach to power savings and environmental sustainability. ▪ Solar technology will be installed across 12 locations with a total registered solar capacity of 211kW. ▪ The reduced tariffs equate to fiscal savings in the first year alone of about $14,000. ▪ The Solar Power Purchase Agreement with the Solar Professionals allows Council to achieve long term savings and help the environment with zero- upfront cost
