Terrasat Overview

  • We make Intelligent BUCs!
  • That’s all we do - no modems, antennas, hubs, etc.
  • WE ARE FOCUSED ON MAKING GREAT BUCs!
  • Founded in 1994
  • 55 employees
  • First to introduce and market “Intelligent” BUC’s
  • Over 18,000 IBUCs/IBUC2s in service
  • Manufactured in our modern facility in Morgan Hill, CA
  • Four worldwide Service Centers

Made in in the USA

Our goal is to deliver our product in 30 days or less. We maintain some stock for next day delivery! Every unit is tested over the operating temp range!!

GaAs AND GaN ?

  • GaAs has been the prevailing technology for decades
  • GaN use has grown rapidly over the last five years because it

allows for smaller, lighter packages

GaAs GaN

slide-6
SLIDE 6

GaN -WHAT ARE THE CLAIMS/ADVANTAGES?

Claimed Advantage Facts

Higher power devices

True, but varying in linearity.

Operate at higher temperature

True, but still has to be managed.

Smaller lighter enclosure

True.

High linearity

  • False. Not as linear as GaAs.

Low power consumption Becoming true.

SLIDE 7

POWER RATINGS

  • Psat – Power at Saturation. A common power rating for BUCs.
  • However, they are almost never operated at saturation
  • P1dB – Power at which gain is compressed by 1dB. Commonly used to

rate power from GaAs BUCs.

  • PLin – The maximum linear power as defined by MIL STD 188-164B
  • This is how GaN BUCs should be rated- The real useable power!

WHEN TALKING ABOUT GaN BUCs – USE Plin – USEABLE POWER!

COMPETITOR A – 80 W Ku

4dB difference equates to USEABLE POWER OF 32 W

OUCH!

slide-12

LET’S SUMMARIZE

  • Don’t get GaN Scammed by the competition!
  • PSAT/P1dB were fine for describing GaAs BUCs, but GaN BUCS need to be rated by Plin
  • Look for :
  • BUC Price/ Plin Eq W

INTELLIGENT BUC VS DUMB BUC

Intelligent BUCs Should be Used When Dumb BUCs Should be Used When Remote site is hard to access Lowest remote site capex is needed Site repair visit is expensive Site is easily accessible Service Level Agreement is in place Extended outage is acceptable Site commissioning needs to be done trouble free Onsite or remote support is easily available
