  1. Name: Rebecca Lazarus University: University of Maryland Department: Marine-Estuarine Environmental Sciences Type of Degree: Ph.D. Candidate Award: 1 st place Platform ($100) I am a Ph.D. student at University of Maryland, and am a Career Pathways Intern with the USGS at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center where I am advised by Drs. Barnett Rattner (USGS) and Mary Ann Ottinger (UMD). My research focus is wildlife ecotoxicology and the exposure and effects of contaminants on wildlife (specifically birds). This presentation discussed the toxicity of the anticoagulant rodenticide chlorophacinone (CPN) to American kestrels ( Falco sparverius ). Blood clotting time was measured as a response to estimate dietary-based toxic reference values. Using a dose- response curve, benchmark doses were calculated. Based upon carcass CPN residues reported in target rodents from field studies, toxic reference values for prolonged clotting time might yield daily exposure that would result in coagulopathy in kestrels.

  2. Name: Gabriela Niño de Guzmán University: University of Maryland Department: Civil and Environmental Engineering Type of Degree: PhD Award: 3 rd place Platform ($50) Gabriela is a PhD candidate at the University of Maryland, College Park. She earned her MS in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park, and her BS in Chemical Engineering at Iowa State University. Her current research is focused on the microbial colonization of permeable reactive barriers that utilize zero-valent iron for trichloroethylene-contaminated groundwater remediation. The goal is to utilize the native soil microbes to improve the remediative ability and longevity of the in-ground filter.

  3. Name: Katherine Rosenbaum University: University of Pittsburgh, Johnstown Department: Biology Type of Degree: BS Award: 1 st place Poster ($100) Katherine Rosenbaum will receive her B.S. in biology from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown in May of 2015 and plans to continue her education at a Veterinary school. Ultimately, Katie would like to pursue a career in Veterinary Pathology. Katie, along with undergraduates Damian Mosher and Muranda Maurer, are working in the lab of Rebecca Webb on the effect of contaminated water on organismal development. They are specifically evaluating the effect of metal contamination on the oral development and gene expression of the benthic macroinvertebrate Chironomus riparius . By doing laboratory experiments with individual metals, as compared to looking at natural waters that have an amalgamation of contaminants, they are able to make direct correlations between each metal and the effect on Chironomid development.

  4. Name: Nicole Hartig University: Towson University Department: Chemistry Type of Degree: BS Award: 3 rd place Poster ($50) I am graduating this May with a double major in Environmental Science and Chemistry from Towson University. I have been working in the Urban Environmental Biogeochemistry Lab of Towson University since the fall of 2012, and my current research is focused on increasing the copper attenuation of a bioretention media by amendment with a cation exchange resin. This research is part of a larger project at Towson University looking at copper attenuation from copper roof runoff using best management practices. I plan to continue my lab work at Towson while applying to graduate/PhD programs in pursuit of a PhD in Environmental Toxicology.
