Apprenticeship, Pre-apprenticeship, Foundations, and Occupational Training.

Apprenticeship Programs

• Currently we offer the following Apprenticeship

deliveries

• Electrician – Levels 1 & 2
• Plumber – Levels 1 & 2
• Oil Burner Mechanic – Levels 1, 2, 3 & Trades Qualification
• Housing Maintainer – Levels 1, 2 & 3
• Carpenter – Levels 1, 2, 3, & 4

We will be seeking accreditation for Level 3 Electrician and Level 1 Cook

Apprenticeship Programs

Strategy for Success for Apprenticeship Program Delivery

• Apprenticeship deliveries are 8 weeks (240 hours) of Theory based

training.

• Students receiving 70% or greater on government exam are deemed

to have passed and can return home/work.

• Students receiving less than 70% but greater than 50% are

mandated to stay an extra 2 weeks for tutoring and are given a second opportunity to challenge the Level exam at the end of the 2 week period.

• Students receiving less than 50% are not eligible for a second

challenge and must repeat Level training again.

Apprenticeship Program Overview

BEFORE APPLYING TO THE APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM THE APPLICANTS: Will be at least 18 years of age Must pass the trade related Trade Entrance Exam (TEE) Attend an Apprenticeship Orientation Session with your local Career Development Officer Have an employer who is willing to employ them as an apprentice and who will provide them with the required on-the-job training The selected employer also must have a certified journeyperson working at the same location and in the same trade that the applicant wants to be trained

Apprenticeship Technical Training

TECHNICAL TRAINING SPECIFICS:  May take place in Nunavut, Alberta or other locations depending on the trade All requests to attend technical training are handled by the Career Development Officers Technical training dates are released in April/May and are sent directly to the apprentices and employers Apprentices are eligible for financial assistance through the GN or Federal programs

Pre-Apprenticeship

• The Pre-Apprenticeship Programs are 32 week multi-disciplinary

Certificate programs that aim to give students the knowledge, skills and confidence to enter into an apprenticeship program.

• Pre-apprenticeship Programs prepare students for employers by

providing them with a strong foundation in Math, Science, Blueprint Reading, Computer Courses, and a large focus on Workplace Safety.

• Graduates of a Pre-Apprenticeship Program are offered the
• pportunity to challenge the Level 1 exam of the trade.

Pre-apprenticeship

• The Government Level exam results are honored by Apprenticeship

Division for a period of 1 year to allow individual opportunity to seek an apprenticeship with an employer.

• On completion of the program, students may be eligible to transfer

up to 240 hours towards an approved Apprenticeship program through the Department of Family Services.

• Industry has been actively seeking and hiring Graduates of the Pre-

apprenticeship Programs for Apprenticeship opportunities.

• Graduates of the Pre-apprenticeship exam are not required to pass

a Trades Entrance Exam to enter into an apprenticeship if they do so within 1 year of graduating from the program.

Foundations

• Currently the College offers 2 streams of Foundations for Trades.
• Trades Access
• Pre-Trades

Foundations

• Trades Access: is an academic trades preparation Certificate

program that is offered over a 32 week period. This program provides fundamental academic upgrading in order to successfully challenge the Trades Entrance Exams, in Levels 1 through 5.

• The program provides the necessary foundation in building skills in

trades related Math, Science, English and Communications that are required to enter into an Apprenticeship, or to pursue other Arctic College Programs. Students will get an opportunity to explore the different careers that are available in the trades, and build on positive learning experiences and develop a solid attitude towards work.

• This program also includes courses in Computers, RPL, and First Aid,

Foundations

• Pre-Trades: is an academic trades preparation program that is
• ffered over a 14 - 16 week period. This program also provides

fundamental academic upgrading in order to successfully challenge the Trades Entrance Exams, in Levels 1 through 5.

• The program provides the necessary foundation in building skills in

trades related Math, Science, and English that are required to enter into an Apprenticeship, or to pursue other Arctic College Programs. Students will get an opportunity to explore the different careers that are available in the trades, and build on positive learning experiences and develop a solid attitude towards work.

• Trades Department is currently working closely with Family Services

to offer 2 pre-Trades Programs in each of the 3 Regions at the community level. This will be coordinated to precede construction in the Communities.

Foundations

• Having successfully passed the Department of Education Trades

Entrance Exam students may be able to pursue their career as an apprentice.

• Apprentices are registered with the Department of Education

through the assistance of Career Development Officers. The Department works closely with private businesses and Government Sectors that are employers of apprentices who seek training.

• Graduates of the Trades Access or Pre-Trades Programs are

automatically accepted into the Pre-apprenticeship Programs without further testing.

The Employer

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE EMPLOYER:

Hire the apprentice to meet the needs of their business Provides a certified journeyperson to teach the skills of the trade Provides adequate resources to provide on-the-job training to the apprentice Keeps the apprentice employed for the period stated in the apprenticeship contract Releases the apprentice from work to attend technical training

• Introduction to Underground Mining
• Class 1, 2, & 3 Driver Training
• Air Brake Endorsement
• Introduction into Heavy Equipment
