HOW MUCH WATER DOES A HORSE NEED PER DAY?

QUESTION FOR YOU

slide-10
SLIDE 10

WATER

HOW MUCH WATER DO HORSES NEED?

The amount of water required will vary depending on the individual horse but can range from 25-50 litres per day for an average size adult horse (around 5 litres per 100 kg bodyweight per day).

  • The volume required will increase in hot weather and additional water

may need to be provided after exercise.

  • Horses will have increased water requirements in certain other

situations (e.g. lactating mares).

SLIDE 41

WHY DO PEOPLE WANT DONKEYS IN DUBLIN?

QUESTION FOR YOU

slide-42
SLIDE 42

HOW MUCH SPACE DOES A HORSE NEED?

QUESTION FOR YOU

The general guide is about 1 acre per horse for grazing, and they should have a companion, as they are herd animals, so more space would be needed. This also allows them to run, exercise, roll on the ground, blow out and have fun.

slide-43
SLIDE 43

"WHEN I BUY A HORSE AND HE WON'T MOVE FOR ME, I HAVE TO WHIP HIM HARD TO GET HIM TO MOVE".

QUESTIONS WE GET ASKED

If you had the right training and skills, you could manage to move your new horse in a less stressful manner, without fear. The existing owner of the horse should have been handling the horse as part of their training. That would help.

slide-44
SLIDE 44

WHY CAN'T ALL THE HORSES THAT NEED TO BE RESCUED BE PUT INTO ONE BIG HUGE FIELD?

QUESTIONS WE GET ASKED

The field would would need to be massive. There are thousands of horses in

  • trouble. It would also cost a lot of money and time to look after them. Also, most

people don't want their horses to be taken away. They think they are OK where they are.
